SHS art students participate, advance in State VASE

February 23, 2015

Sweetwater High School art students participated in the Region14 Visual Art Scholastic Event Saturday. Advancing to State VASE are Keegan Von Atzigen, Kala Wofford, Abby Lynch and Kendra Pack. Lizzy Hendrick's sculpture will be on display at the Grace Museum for Youth Art Month in March. Victoria Carley received a Superior rating for her Dotted Butterfly.

A 70% chance of freezing rain and sleet will be likely today, with some thunder also possible. It will be cloudy and cold, with a high near 24 and north-northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph. Wind chill values could be between 8 and 14. Little to no ice accumulation is expected, with total daytime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
For tonight, we'll see mostly cloudy conditions with a low around 22 and northeast winds at 5 to 10 mph. Winds will shift to light and variable in the evening. Wind chill values will be between 15 and 20.

It is with heavy hearts that Ludlum Measurements, Inc. shares the news of the loss of our company founder, leader, and dear friend, Mr. Don Ludlum. Don Ludlum passed in the early morning hours of Feb. 20, 2015.

Sweetwater Jaycees host Media Day

The Sweetwater Jaycees are gearing up for the 57th Annual World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up. Media day is held a few weeks before the Round-Up every year where Miss Snake Charmer contestants are introduced to the media and the Jaycees demonstrate how to milk the snakes of their venom to make anti-venom. The Sweetwater Jaycees Rattlesnake Round-Up is an educational event held on the second weekend of March. Sweetwater Jaycee Riley Sawyers is shown talking to the pageant contestants about snake safety.

Officers, city leaders celebrate opening of new police building

Sweetwater patrolman Cory Stroman said the city's new police department is a "major step up" from the nearly 90-year-old facility — it was built in 1926 — the staff has been using for decades.
Stroman was just one of many law enforcement officers on hand Friday for the grand opening and Masonic dedication of the new 14,051-square-foot facility, which is located at 400 East Avenue A.

Fundraiser set to purchase headstone for Randy Rodriguez

In November 2014, local racecar driver Brandon Smith lost his biggest fan, six year old Randy Rodriguez, to an inoperable brain tumor. Since then, the funeral has come and gone but Randy's memory still remains, as does some unfinished business.
Randy's illness took its toll on his family in many ways, especially financially. One thing missing from Randy's final resting place is a headstone, which the family is unable to afford.

Ludlum Measurements founder dies at age 82

Don Ludlum, founder of Ludlum Measurements, Inc., 82, of Sweetwater, passed away on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at Heart Hospital Baylor in Plano.
On Feb. 14, 1962, Ludlum Measurements, Inc. was instituted in Sweetwater by Don Ludlum. The Oklahoma-born, Kansas-bred founder's early life encounters in business practices and customer service from his grandfather and father paved the way for Ludlum to glean experience.

Several athletes will play in FCA all-star contests

In addition to the three area coaches named last month, a total of 14 area high school senior athletes and cheerleaders will be participating later this year in the Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-Star Festival, a three-day event in three West Texas cities.
Sweetwater High School baseball coach Roland Her-rera, the head coach for the North all-star baseball team, will have two of his own athletes — J.P. Poe and Hayden Reeves — with him when the game is held on June 12 in San Angelo.
