Ken Becker, the Executive Director of SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development), presented an informative program on the gas and oil industry during the Wednesday, noontime meeting of the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club.
Since January 2012, SEED has been following the industry, notably the Cline Shale. As the exploration is a new find, the Cline Shale is not found on most maps, although time will tell its true location.
One of every parent's worst nightmares came true on May 20 this year in Moore, Okla. when two elementary schools â€” the Briarwood and Plaza Towers schools â€” were destroyed by a tornado that ripped through the town. Seven third graders perished after being crushed by debris that day. Neither of the schools had weather-safe rooms for the students and faculty to go to.
If you heard a loud sound or felt the strong winds today, you might have been experiencing the landing of a helicopter right in Sweetwater on Jerry Huffman Drive, next to the Central Fire Station. Air Methods out of Snyder â€”Â the company that operates the Native Air helicopter â€” put on a landing zone class for members of the Sweetwater Fire Department today as part of continuing education for the firefighters.

We all know the song: â€śAmazing Grace.â€ť We say and believe Godâ€™s grace is sufficient in all times, in all things and in all days, but do you realize there are different types of grace in the scripture. I have spoken often about â€śliving graceâ€ť for our day to day situations and â€śdying graceâ€ť for when we meet the Lord. We also see in Acts 16:25 that Paul and Silas had â€śsinging graceâ€ť when they were thrown in jail. In Colossians 4:6 Paul talks about the importance of believers having â€śspeaking grace.â€ť Also, in 2 Timothy 2:1 Paul reminds us of â€śstrengthening grace.â€ť
During Monday's county commissioners' meeting, the proposed tax rate for the 2013-2014 fiscal year was presented.
The total tax rate was presented at .507552, which exceeded the effective tax rate. Thus, a record vote was taken and unanimously passed.
The proposed budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year was then filed with the County Clerk, which was approved. Approval was also given toward a public hearing on the 2013-2014 proposed budget, set for Monday, September 9.
The Roscoe Collegiate High School varsity cheerleaders hosted Cheer Pals for girls in Pre-K through sixth grade. Many attended the cheer camp this week.

Two public hearings were held during Tuesdayâ€™s City Commission meeting, one of which was a hearing on substandard structures located within the city. Making the presentation were Kirk Harris, city services director, and Danny Alderson with the Code Enforcement Department.

Kornpop the Klown (shown) is coming to Sweetwater. Kornpop is a professional clown that has travelled all over the world using his talents to share the gospel with others.
He uses comedy, illusions and balloons to present Godâ€™s message and will keep the audience entertained regardless of age. Kornpop will be at the Church of God of Prophecy, 2000 Chester Street this Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

Sweetwater City Manager Eddie Brown gave his monthly report during Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
An update was offered on the progress of the SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building, as work on drywall, paint, and the ceiling is currently being completed. The city is looking at a completion date of August 31, in which Brown said the progress is on target for that timing.
