Sweetwater is one of 43 communities featured in the 2013 Texas Midwest Guide. The 18th edition of the annual publication is now in circulation in print as well as available as a free app from Amazon, Apple and Google app stores and online at www.texasmidwestguide.org. Printed copies are available at the chamber of commerce office.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has several dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption are two male mixed breed dogs, one female mixed breed dog and two male mixed breed puppies.
According to Sweetwaterâ€™s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
Students could be seen around town with their parents this week, enjoying a few days off from school during the Spring Break holiday. Many families took advantage of the warm weather and headed outdoors to places around Nolan County. The Manafest Spring Tour is coming to Sweetwater and will be playing at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Municipal Auditorium.
The tour will be bringing in internationally known rock and rap artist Manafest, Superchick lead singer Tricia Brock, Jeâ€™Kob and David Dunn.
Manafest is a very well known artist within the Christian rock and rap world. His music can be heard on local radio stations such as Air 1, and the tour coming through Sweetwater is expected to be a great thing for young people in the community.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 53 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on Mar. 14, 2013.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served three civil papers and made two arrests on Mar. 14, 2013.

New bridge expected to be open by mid-summer
Nolan County â€” The Texas Department of Transportationâ€™s Abilene District began a project this week to replace the US 84 eastbound overpass at westbound I-20 in Nolan County. The overpass was severely damaged after a collision in late September and was demolished in November to allow for a replacement.
Â The new structure will be a one-span bridge with retaining walls, said Big Spring Area Engineer Jesse Mendoza, P.E., who is overseeing the project. The overpass is expected to be finished and open to traffic within four months.
Texas Farmers Union (TFU) President Wes Sims stated that the budget proposal recently released by the leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives and Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-WI is unfair and would be very harmful to the economy of rural Texas.
"Our farmers, ranchers and rural communities have already suffered a disproportionate share of cuts from the farm bill extension and sequester. It will also turn the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) into block grants for states," said Sims.
