Abilene Regional Airport hosts Chamber Coffee

Republican Women of West Texas installs officers

Many attended the third meeting of the Republican Women of West Texas, held at the Hall Law Firm in Sweetwater. About 18 new applications were turned in for the new group and officers were installed at the meeting.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued no citations and made four arrests on Oct. 2, 2012.

The SPD received 12, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 900 block of Locust.
• Forgery — Sweetwater area.
• Information only — 1700 block of Hailey.
• Fail to ID fugitive — 400 block of E. Third.
• Criminal trespass — Coral Cove.

Arrested by SPD:
• Filmon Belay, 21 — Possession of marijuana.
• Kenneth Speed, 30 — Warrant.
• Cody Farley, 20 — Theft.
• Lashondrick Richardson, 22 — Warrant.

The Sweetwater Chuck Wagon Gang serving community crowds

The Sweetwater Chuck Wagon Gang has been around for quite some time and has served many Nolan County crowds, as well as other crowds when the Gang used to travel. The Gang specializes in cooking brisket, steak, potato salad, ranch style beans and other items. "We specialize in chuck wagon-style cooking," said member Tom Henderson. "We also pride ourselves in feeding many in a short period of time."

Sweetwater ISD announces early release times for Oct. 8

Sweetwater Independent School District Assistant Superintendent Kathy Smartt announced earlier that the first early release day for students will be coming up on Monday, Oct. 8. 
Campus dismissal times are as follows:
• J.P. Cowen and Southeast Elementary — 12:15 p.m.
• East Ridge Elementary — 12:20 p.m.
• Sweetwater High School — 12:50 p.m.
• Sweetwater Intermediate — 12:55 p.m.
• Sweetwater Middle School — 1 p.m.

"Sundae Fun!" event set for Oct. 7

The Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains will be having a "Sundae Fun!" event on Sunday, October 7th at Camp Boothe Oaks.
"Join us as we make sundaes and discuss the Girl Scout program in Nolan County," said event organizers. "We are looking for K-12 girls to join the troops, as well as any adults who may want to become more involved."
In the program, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership and strong values. Annual membership dues are $12.

J.P. Cowen receives iPads

The Region 14 Education Service Center (who gets the grant for Headstart) recently bought four iPads per Headstart classroom at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center. 
Lenior Peterson was the Region 14 representative who made this happen for Sweetwater. There are six Headstart classrooms in all in Sweetwater so there are 24 new iPads for Headstart students to learn on at the school.

Telling Our Stories Workshop this month at library

Linda Linn will be at the County-City Library in Sweetwater on Oct. 9, 16, and 23 to teach a Telling Our Stories workshop. The previous class, held in February, had their stories made into a book. "We hope to add the stories from this class to the book that is in the library from the previous class," said Becky Brock, Library Director.
The workshop is free and open to anyone of any age. No sign-up is necessary; just show up to any class on either Oct. 9, 16, or 23. Linda says "When you think about writing your life story, it can be overwhelming."

Wilkins recognized by WASP Museum

Sharron Davis, WASP Museum Director, recently presented a replica Silver Wings pin to C.S. Wilkins, a founding board member of the National WASP WWII Museum at the Colorado City ISD Wall of Honor Ceremony.
Mr. Wilkins, a graduate of Colorado City High School was honored for his meritorious military service and other outstanding achievements. As a young high school student, C.S. would hitch-hike from Colorado City to Avenger Field to watch the WASP in training there and was inspired by them to become a pilot himself.
