Weekend weather for Sweetwater

Looks like we're in for a warm-up today, with a high near 65 and sunny skies. Winds will be from the west-northwest around 10 mph.
Tonight, expect mostly clear skies and a low around 43, with south-southwestern winds at 5 to 10 mph.
This weekend will continue to bring in warm temperatures, with highs in the mid-70s and lows ranging from the upper 40s and low 50s. Winds, however, will continue to remain from the north.

Lulu’s helping to paint the town purple this week

Lulu's Super Mercado in Sweetwater is helping to paint the town purple this week with their building décor and specials going on in the store.
Any $5 purchase gets customers a free purple nine ounce drink for coffee, water or soft drinks. The store is also giving away purple ribbons this week and every 100th customer will receive a door prize.
Customers can also make a donation to the American Cancer Society in the store and have their name put on a purple heart to be displayed in the store window.

Fire Marshal inspects fire behind former nursing home

The Fire Marshal was in town Monday to inspect the remains of yet another fire, this one in a small wooded area just south of the former nursing home on Cypress and between it and Peppy’s on Main Street.
City employee Eric Acosta was driving on Main Street Sunday about 11 p.m. and happened to notice the blaze. He and another city employee were able to put it out.
The fire appears to have been set. It is the third case of suspected arson to occur in a one block area. The other two are at the McBurnett house at 210 Cypress and the Treviño home at 211 Cypress.

Another fire in Roscoe last night

Members of the Roscoe Fire Department received a page about a structure fire in Roscoe on Wednesday night at about 10:30 p.m., according to Roscoe Fire Chief Gary Armstrong. The Sweetwater Fire Department also responded to the fire.
The structure was on south FM 608, about a half of a mile outside of the Roscoe city limits. When fire fighters arrived at the scene, the structure was fully involved.
The owner of the home is currently in a retirement home and the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Cline Shale could bring more than oil

During the recent Nolan County Forward Planning committee meeting at the Sweetwater Country Club, the topic of public safety was presented by Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda.
The meeting allowed for different entities within the county to come together to learn about the potential impact and consequences of the Cline Shale oil development.
Chief Frieda's report was based mostly on his recent conversation with a police chief from North Dakota, as the northern town has also been affected by the Bakken shale development.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on April 30, 2013.

The SPD received 37, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1000 block of View.

Arrested by SPD:
• Richard Lopez, 55 — Warrants.
• Justin Tollison, 21 — Warrants.
• Kenedra Hill, 30 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, no civil papers served and made three arrests on April 30, 2013.

We've made a complete 180 with today's weather, as the high will be 45 with mostly cloudy skies. It will also be windy with northern winds from 30 to 35 mph, gusting up to 45 mph. Chance of rain is 30%.
Tonight, expect partly cloudy skies with a low around 34. North winds will continue at 20 to 25 mph, decreasing to 10 to 25 mph after midnight. Gusts could be up to 35 mph.

Mediterranean Zucchini Ribbon Salad

With the onset of spring, you will see a bounty of small zucchini at the farmers markets and grocery stores. When they are young spring squash, they are tender and delicious raw. With this vibrant lemon vinaigrette and other gifts of spring such as verdant herbs and sweet cherub tomatoes, this tastes like spring itself!

Ingredients:
2 pounds small zucchini, trimmed
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons finely grated fresh lemon zest
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves

Free diabetes event tomorrow at SNCHD

The Texas A&M Agrilife Extension office in Nolan County will host a free Do Well, Be Well With Diabetes event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department. Before the activities begin, free blood glucose checks will be given from 8:30-9 a.m.
Local doctor Larry E. McEachern, M.D. will kick off the event with his program, "What is diabetes?"
Speakers will also include Ted Bayse, owner and pharmacist at The Medicine Place. He will explain medication. He will speak from 10:15-11 a.m.

National Day of Prayer tomorrow

May 1, 2013

In honor of the National Day of Prayer, the community of Sweetwater is invited to participate in a 12-hour prayer vigil at the Sweetwater Prayer Center at 1418 Hailey Street. Everyone is welcome to participate any time from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, to unite in prayer for the nation and community. Prayer stations will be set up following the 7X7 prayer model providing opportunities to pray for government, education, church, family, media, business and military.
