On Friday, member of the Roscoe High School senior class helped to clean up the home of Sweetwater Police Officer Armando Renteria, his wife, Andrea, a local teacher and their family that was burned in a fire on Tuesday evening. His daughter is a member of the Roscoe senior class. Students tore down burned walls and trashed what could not be salvaged.
Kelsi Crosson hugs her twin sister, Kendra, after Sweetwater defeated Big Spring, 44-43, on Friday to advance to the Class 3A girls basketball playoffs. Sweetwater, the third-place team from District 4-3A, will face District 3-3A runnerup Fort Stockton at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in bi-district. The game will be played at Sonora High School. Most teenagers dream about a summer trip to New York. They imagine the plane touching down at JFK International Airport, spotting the Statue of Liberty for the first time, visiting all the TV studios, attending a Broadway musical â€” the list of entertainment could go on and on. For a group of 26 Sweetwater teens, a trip to New York is on the summer calendar, but itâ€™s going to be a very different kind of trip.
NOLAN COUNTY MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE
C. Barrett Thomas, Assistant District Attorney for the 32ndJudicial District Attorneyâ€™s Office, was elected to the Executive Council of the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) this week. Thomas has served on the TYLAâ€™s Board of Directors since 2011, but he will now assume the role of treasurer for the upcoming year. Thomas will continue to work as a felony criminal prosecutor under the direction of District Attorney, Ann Reed, where he has served since September of 2011. Thomas also manages a family law practice, The Thomas Firm, which has been based in Sweetwater since he joined Ms.
Never found time to read the Bible? First Presbyterian Church (FPC) of Sweetwater is starting an all-ages program to Read the Bible in 90 Days.
Pastor Kary Fry wants to promote Bible literacy and says, "A whole generation of us were raised on Bible themes, where the Bible was used only as reference."
While many people may feel that they're not "smart" enough or don't have the background to attend Sunday school, this program will be for beginners, and literally get everyone on the same page. The program is open to all.
The Sweetwater Choral Department competed this past Saturday at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest at McMurry University.
All six Sweetwater Middle School soloists received a First Division Superior rating including Tiffany Bugarin, Megan Dean, Crystal Foust, Martin Morini, Kelsey Parker and Tarryn Velasquez.
The Sweetwater High School soloists were also successful. Abby McPherson received a 2nd Division Excellent. Four freshman received a First Division Superior including Kilanie Arpin, Cierra Knox, Brittany Jimenez and Dylan Jimenez.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued eight citations and made one arrest on Feb. 6, 2013.
The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served no civil papers and made five arrests on Feb. 6, 2013.

The annual Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant is a time where young ladies from throughout the Big Country come together to compete for scholarship money. At last year's pageant, the theme for the night was Wings Across America in honor of the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots).
The annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. The pageant is open to all girls between the ages of 16-19 who live within a 75 mile radius of Sweetwater.
