American Heritage Girls receive badges at Court of Honor

County tax rate to increase

The Nolan County Commissioners met for its regular meeting on Monday morning, Aug. 8, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse to discuss a variety of issues.
The proposed tax rate for the next fiscal year was discussed following recent department hearings from the budget workshops that have been taking place. The proposed tax rate presented was at .423023, equaling an increase of about three cents.

Greer is library Artist of the Month

The art display at the County-City Library is the pencil drawings of Terry and Bayli Greer. Bayli is the granddaughter of Terry and Gayle Greer. Terry Greer passed away in August of 2003. He began drawing in 2000 as a hobby and had no formal training. Bayli began drawing after seeing her grandfather’s work. Shown is Terry’s wife, Gayle Greer, next to some of his work currently on display at the library. The library is open Monday from 1-6 p.m.; Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

King to host meeting

State Representative Susan L. King would like to invite the residents of District 71 to a Public Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the Abilene Public Library, located at 202 Cedar in Abilene, beginning at 6 p.m.

Camp Boothe Oaks hosts Twilight Camp

Swinging Bridge Twilight Camp was held last week at Camp Boothe Oaks, south of Sweetwater. "Have you ever heard a tree sing? Have you ever seen a bug dance? The camp comes alive when the girls start arriving. When we grow up, we forget to look down, look up and look around to everything growing and living around us. We are so busy making a living that we forget to live. Even in this tremendous heat the girls had a marvelous time.” One of the special things is singing around the "Singing Tree."

Children entering kindergarten and seventh grade require certain immunizations

Prior to the first day of school each child entering kindergarten are required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine, two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, and two doses of varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian), school nurse or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of varicella disease (chickenpox), or of varicella immunity is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine.

VA town hall meeting planned for Thursday

Daniel Marsh, director of the West Texas VA Health Care System, invites interested veterans, veteran's groups or friends and families of veterans to attend and participate in a VA town hall meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011. The meeting will be held at the Law Enforcement Center in the second floor conference room at 450 Pecan Street in Abilene.
Following an overview by Mr. Marsh, leadership will provide information regarding newly implemented programs, changes to existing programs and some future programs in the planning phase. Constructions and staffing will also be shared.

FFB plans new motor bank and remodel for local bank office

First Financial Bank, N.A., Sweetwater, has announced that it will break ground this week on the construction of a new motor bank and remodeling of the interior of the bank at the main office at 201 Elm Street to provide a more appealing environment for customers and to improve customer service.

Drive for United Way set for Saturday

It's almost time to tee-off for a good cause.
The Nolan County United Way 2011 summer golf tournament — Drive for United Way — is set for Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Sweetwater Country Club. The tournament starts at 8 a.m. to a shotgun start.
With the fast approach of the summer tournament there is still a need for hole and prize sponsors. Sponsorships are available for $100. Sponsors will receive their name in the newspaper and on a hole during the tournament.
