Free lunch and learn seminar on arthritis set for May 15

More than 50 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds are affected by arthritis, the leading cause of disability in the United States. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) aims to help the community understand more about arthritis with a free Lunch and Learn Seminar on May 15.
The Lunch and Learn Seminar is a free program presented by Dr. Mark Seibel, an orthopedic surgeon at RPMH. Using his expansive knowledge and medical expertise, Dr. Seibel will explain the basics of arthritis and its impact on people with the disorder.

Another trophy for the Mustangs

Members of the Sweetwater baseball team gather to hold up their trophy following an 8-6 win over Pampa on Saturday that clinched the area championship.

Local city, school elections held this weekend

City and school elections were held on Saturday, as voters headed to the polls in several communities throughout the Big Country.
With a total of 205 votes, Greg Wortham will continue to serve as the Mayor of Sweetwater. Wortham garnered 174 votes, while his opponent Frankie SoRelle obtained 31 votes.
Precinct 1 Commissioner Larry May received 61 votes, while Precinct 3 Commissioner Ricky Castro obtained 19 votes. Both men will continue to serve on the Sweetwater City Commission as a result.

East Ridge students visit SIS

Third graders from East Ridge Elementary School visited Sweetwater Intermediate School on Monday morning to get a tour of the school they will be attending next year and see what fourth grade life is like.
The third graders also received a special treat from SIS fifth graders who performed songs from their rendition of “Aladdin.”

Teen dies in ATV crash

May 13, 2013

One person was killed and one injured in a one vehicle All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) crash on Sunday evening in Scurry County. This crash occurred at 7:59 p.m. on Mountain View Drive, one mile north of Tobosa Drive and four miles south of Snyder.
Lance Davis, 12 years of age from Snyder was the driver of the ATV. Davis was taken to Cogdell Memorial Hospital in Snyder with leg injuries.
Jaret Scott Graham, 14 years of age from Snyder was a passenger on the ATV. Graham was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Boyd at 8:54 p.m. The body was taken to Combest Family Funeral Home in Lubbock.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 55 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on May 9, 2013.

The SPD received 35, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a building — 1300 block of Robert Lee.
• Disorderly conduct — 200 block of W. Broadway.
• Forgery — 800 block of E. Broadway.
• Criminal mischief — 2700 block of E. Broadway.
• Disorderly conduct — 300 block of Lamar.
• Burglary of a habitation — 100 block of E. New Mexico.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile — Disorderly conduct.

Doulas: The "mother to a mother"

On Sunday, mothers across the country will be celebrated. However, the month also recognizes someone who is called a "mother to a mother," as May is "International Doula Month."
The word "doula" derives from the Greek word which means "a woman who serves." Today, that same word extends to describe a trained, experienced professional who provides physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and after birth.
