Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that county committee election nominations began June 15, 2012. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2012 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.
Encompass Home Health in Sweetwater hosted a fan drive, giving away box fans free to the public on Friday, June 29, at their local office, located at 1008 Lamar Street.
Encompass Home Health staff identified a need for this service while making home visits in and around the area. They noted that many of the elderly did not have air-conditioning or simply would not run their air-conditioner because of high utility costs.
Texans who are eligible to vote, but not yet registered are almost out of time to register to vote in the July 31, 2012 Primary Runoff Elections. Voter registration applications must be postmarked no later than today, Monday, July 2, 2012. Information on how to register to vote in Texas can be found at www.votetexas.gov, or by calling the voter registrar in a voterâ€™s county of residence.
The Board of Directors of First Financial Bank, N.A., Sweetwater announced that Gayle Davis has joined First Financial as Assistant Branch Manager and Banking Officer for the Merkel branch.

Eddy Gossett is a 2001 graduate of Sweetwater High School. Only a month after graduating, on July 30, 2001, Gossett joined the United States Marine Corps and underwent recruit training.
He has been with the Marines for almost 11 years, and he is currently on his fourth deployment in Afghanistan with the 1st Maintenance Battalion as Assistant Convoy Commander and Platoon Sergeant.
The Sweetwater Lions Club will be hosting the annual Fourth of July parade on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Nolan County Courthouse. The theme is "Americans Serve!" Anyone wishing to participate in the parade needs to be at the Courthouse at 9:30 a.m. for line-up. All of the service groups in the area are encouraged to participate. Decorated bicycles, wagons andÂ floats are welcome in the parade. The parade will go east on Broadway to Elm Street. It will turn north on Elm, by the County-City Library andÂ will end in the Nolan County Coliseum parking lot.
A local man was recently arrested for indecency with a child by contact. Felipe DeJesus Lozano, Jr., 18, was arrested by the Sweetwater Police Department after he admitted he had touched his 10-year-old relative inappropriately according to officials at the Sweetwater Police Department. The charge is classified as a second degree felony and if found guilty, Lozano faces 2-20 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and a fine of up to $10,000.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male chihuahua, a female mixed breed dog and a female Labrador mix. According to Sweetwaterâ€™s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

This is the fourth year the Chamber has donated to BCCHA.
Another â€śAll Class Reunionâ€ť for Homecoming 2012 is planned for Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2 p.m. to midnight at the Sweetwater High School Cafeteria, according to Linda Kiser Browning Miller, event director.
Jeff Stein of KXOX Radio will be the emcee, and Big Boys BBQ will cater the supper at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and a short program will be held at 5 p.m. After the barbecue supper, J.B. Cloud of KBCY Radio of Abilene will serve as D.J. for the music and dance beginning at about 7:30 p.m. The D.J. will present music from the 50â€™s to the present.
