The Nolan County Commissioners' Court met for its regular meeting on Monday morning, July 25, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Though two commissioners were away — Terry Willman of Precinct 1 in New York City and Precinct 3 Commissioner Tommy White in the Dominican Republic, several matters were still deliberated on by the other half of the group (Precincts 2 and 4 Commissioners Terry Locklar and Tony Lara, respectively).
The Sweetwater Jack in the Box has been closed since Friday, July 8, 2011, according to the Jack in the Box corporate office. According to the corporate office, the franchisee of the location is Clarissa Kopchak of Stephenville, who also owns the Jack in the Box in Abilene that is also closed. Many calls to Kopchak remain unanswered and messaged have not been returned. It is unknown whether the closings are temporary or permanent.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 130 calls for service, issued 12 citations and made 12 arrests from July 22-24, 2011.
The SPD received 85, 911 calls.

AMARILLO, Texas, — Hastings Entertainment, Inc., a leading multimedia entertainment retailer with 145 stores in 20 states has announced the closing of its 1102 East Broadway location in Sweetwater on Aug. 20, 2011. The store will be conducting a going out of business sale through Aug. 20, 2011.
The Sweetwater, Texas location is closing due to store operating profit being less than that required by management. This location employs approximately 35 full and part-time associates. All gift cards can be redeemed at www.gohastings.com.

Cancer Services Network will offer a six-week educational support group for those interested in learning to live beyond a diagnosis of cancer. Sessions are set for 5:30-7 p.m. Thursdays beginning Aug. 18, 2011, at the Hinds Square Classroom located at 100 Chestnut, Suite 112. Cancer Services Network is an agency of the Nolan County United Way.

The drawing for the four Rangers tickets and $150 Mastercard to benefit the Wounded Warriors project was held Friday, July 15, 2011 at Texas National Bank. Raffle tickets were sold to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Alliance. Funds from the ticket sales will send a wounded soldier to Eagles Summit Ranch in Junction, TX for both training and tools needed to turn tragedy into triumph. Drawing the winner was Jim Kelley, Chief of Police. The winner of the prize package was Ron Johnston. Ron very generously donated the tickets and Mastercard to the family of local Wounded Warrior Cpl.
Hot temperatures aren't stopping Nolan County United Way from driving for a good cause.Â
The summer golf tournament Drive for United Way has been set for Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Sweetwater Country Club. There will be an 8 a.m. scramble with a shotgun start.Â
“The funds raised from the tournament will once again go towards supporting our 10 local agencies,” Wendy Smartt, NCUW executive director, said.Â
Currently on a global tour, the International Coin Collectors Association (ICCA) will be making a stop in Sweetwater, TX at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, located at 300 SE Georgia Ave., on Monday, July 25 through Saturday, July 30. The show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The ICCA will be purchasing coins, paper currency, gold and silver on behalf of their global network of collectors, dealers and refineries. This special event is free and open to the public.
