Annual BCWSC meeting slated for April 19

On Feb. 28, 2013 the TWDB approved funding of $7.5 million for the Bitter Creek Water Supply Company to make improvements to its water system. For several years the Bitter Creek WSC has been looking for a more affordable supplemental supply of water. In December 2011, the WSC secured an option to lease 1,274 acres of groundwater rights in the Edwards Trinity Aquifer. After test wells revealed a good quantity of high quality water, the WSC filed an application to the Texas Water Development Board for funding required to secure this supplemental water supply.

Library Tag Day is April 3

The Woman’s Forum recently met at Java Jax in Sweetwater for their monthly meeting. Discussion included the upcoming Library Tag Day slated for Wednesday, April 3.
The purpose of Library Tag Day is to raise funds for the County-City Library. Letters to businesses will be sent out soon and on April 3, ladies from the Woman’s Forum will be around town soliciting businesses and individuals for donations. Tags are given as a token of their appreciation. They also serve as a reminder to people seeing them, to make their donation to the Library.

Mother and son uninjured after morning wreck today

According to Sweetwater Emergency Services Manager Grant Madden, a mother and her young son were east bound near the 236 mile marker on Interstate 20 on Wednesday morning when she had to swerve to miss a car that had slowed down.
The driver swerved into the center median and went through the cable barrier, ending up going the wrong way in the west bound lane. She missed a pickup that was in the lane by swerving back to the center median and back into the cable barrier.

Grants discussed at hospital board meeting

The Hospital Administrator's report was given during Monday night's meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District, held at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
Donna Boatright discussed two different grants, one of which was recently awarded to RPMH. The hospital was informed last week that they received a $50,000 capital improvement loan fund/grant, which will be used toward the construction of the new medical offices.
In addition, an application was submitted for a solar grant, after being informed about the funding by McKinstry, the company overseeing the construction on campus.

Policies approved at SISD board meeting

March 27, 2013

Some district policies were discussed and approved during the Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees' monthly meeting in March.
For next year, the SISD Student/Parent iPad User Agreement will impact students in the seventh through tenth grades--along with their parents--as the four grade levels will have the mobile device. While still in discussion, sixth graders may possibly be added with a transitionary period of in-class use in the first semester before taking them home.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Mar. 25, 2013.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1200 block of Hailey.
• 1800 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Injury to a child — Sweetwater area.

Arrested by SPD:
• Anthony Monroe, 28 — Driving while license invalid with previous conviction.
• Thomas Carr, 22 — Warrants.
• William Whitaker, 57 — Public intoxication.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 52. Winds will remain from the south at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts topping out at 25 mph.

Initial EQIP sign up ends soon

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) District Conservationist Mandi M. Ligon reminds agriculture producers that the second ranking period cut-off date for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is April 19, 2013. Producers interested in EQIP should submit applications to the Nolan County NRCS office by the deadline so their applications can be considered during the second ranking period of 2013.

Free colorectal cancer screening offered

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so Hendrick Cancer Center of Abilene will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, located at 301 E. 12th in Sweetwater from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 28. They will be offering the fecal occult blood test. A new easier and more accurate test will be used this year. The fecal occult blood test is a simple at-home procedure that checks a stool sample for hidden blood, which can be a sign of cancer, polyps or other internal disorders.

Enrollment numbers highlighted at SISD board meeting

Enrollment numbers across SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) were highlighted as part of the Superintendent’s Report given at Thursday’s meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees.
Sweetwater ISD accounts for 21 of the 62 total students at Wallace Accelerated High School. Of that total, 11 students are classified as “completers;” eight of the 11 students are now considered graduates.
