SHS senior awarded scholarship

Sweetwater High School senior Kyle Lambert was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Permian Basin Fair in Odessa.
Each year, the fair gives scholarships to high school senior 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) members who show livestock at the fair and complete the application and interview process.
Lambert is the Student Advisor of the Sweetwater FFA Chapter and First Vice President of the Area 2 FFA Association. On Sunday, September 9, he exhibited his market lambs at the Permian Basin Fair.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 100 calls for service, issued eight citations and made 11 arrests from Sept. 14-16, 2012.

The SPD received 48, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 200 block of E Third.
• 800 block of E 16th.

Calls for service:
• Sexual assault — 400 block of Pine.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of W New Mexico.
• Burglary of building — 1100 block of W Arizona.
• Burglary of vehicle — 900 block of Bowie.

Arrested by SPD:
• Anthony Sapp, 27 — Possession of controlled substance.
• Teresa Guajardo, 23 — Family violence assault.

Fire consumes family home

A Friday morning fire has left a family without their home and without any of their belongings. The fire was electrical in nature and consumed the entire home and a vehicle as well.
The family — Alvin and Rosa Rogers and daughter Gracy Sosa — is currently staying at La Quinta in Sweetwater and a donation jar has been put at the front desk for donations for the family. As of right now, the family is mostly in need of clothes, as all of their clothes were burned in the fire. Any donations are much appreciated. Family clothing sizes include:

RPMH launches monthly caregiver support meeting

One in four adult Americans serve as caregivers to an elderly relative, spouse or friend. This crucial role can take a physical and mental toll on the caregiver, but with the appropriate knowledge and support, the job can be less taxing.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) understands the importance of caregivers. To make their job easier, the hospital is scheduling the first of what is intended to be a monthly support group meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Koinonia coffee shop opens

First Baptist Church announced the opening of Koinonia Coffee. The coffee shop opened last Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, with fresh ground coffee and homemade tea cakes in the newly remodeled Welcome Center on the corner of Third and Elm Streets.
Koinonia Coffee was originally planned with the remodel of the Education Building and is now beginning to take form and develop in its ministry to the community. The Welcome Center of First Baptist Church houses Koinonia Coffee and is a warm and friendly atmosphere to meet with friends and enjoy some great coffee and food.

Sadler stops in Sweetwater

Paul Sadler, the Democratic candidate for the United States Senate, made a stop in Sweetwater on Wednesday morning, September 12 for a "meet and greet" event with the public, hosted by Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham.
Following the gathering, Sadler sat down with the Sweetwater Reporter to give voters an insight on why he should come out as the victor in November.
Sadler said that between he and his opponent, Republican Senate candidate Ted Cruz, he is the only one who is qualified and has experience. Between 1991 and 2003, Sadler served in the Texas House of Representatives.
