Girl Scouts thank Nolan County Foundation for matching grant

Nolan County Girl Scouts recently presented Homer K. Taylor, Executive Director of the Nolan County Foundation, with a thank you poster for being selected for a matching grant of $5,000. The grant will go towards the renovation of Camp Boothe Oaks. Making the presentation were Crystal McFaul, Lesley Knight, Haedyn Ramirez, Haley Ramirez, Ana Hall, Homer Taylor, Cheyenne Moorhead, Kate Hall, Gabby Gomez and Morgan McFaul.

RPMH preps for survivors’ luncheon

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is gearing up for their annual Breast Cancer Survivors’ Luncheon this Friday, with early numbers showing a large crowd coming together for the cause.
An early preview of the event was given as part of the Administrator’s Report given by Donna Boatright during the Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors’ meeting held on Monday night, October 22 at RPMH. As of Monday night, over 50 reservations have been received for the Friday luncheon.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 47 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Oct. 23, 2012.

The SPD received 23, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Forgery — Sweetwater.
• Evading arrest with a motor vehicle — Sweetwater area.

Arrested by SPD:
• Fabian Peña, 30 — Warrants.
• Malcolm Black, 18 — Warrant.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests from Oct. 23, 2012.

TSTC Holiday Nut Mix

The following recipe will be given to the Texas State Technical College Board of Regents at their dinner on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012.

TSTC Holiday Nut Mix

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
INGREDIENTS:
· 1 pound mixed nuts
· Salt & pepper to taste (omit salt if using salted nuts)
· 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
· 1-2 teaspoons chili powder (adjust amount for heat & intensity; can substitute curry if desired)
· 2 tablespoons melted butter
· 3 tablespoons finely chopped rosemary
· 2 tablespoons brown sugar
· 2 tablespoons light corn syrup

RPMH luncheon to celebrate breast cancer survivors

Invasive breast cancer strikes 12 percent of American women. As the leading cancer among females, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is celebrating survivors, remembering loved ones and raising awareness regarding the importance of advance detection at the Breast Cancer Survivors Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 26.
Taking place at the RPMH ER Classroom, the luncheon will feature keynote speaker Charlotte Brooks who will speak on her firsthand experience with breast cancer. Brooks is known locally as a business leader, philanthropist and volunteer.

Letter possibly linked to Dunn disappearance

Only days after it was reported that a private investigator was hired to assist in the Hailey Dunn disappearance case, some new information is surfacing.
Abilene news outlets KRBC and KTAB--who both report under the bigcountryhomepage.com website--have released a letter that they say could possibly reveal new details on the last moments when the missing Colorado City teenager was seen almost two years ago.

Former pro wrestler climbing for kids

Sweetwater can take even more pride in one of their home-grown celebrities, as John "Bradshaw" Layfield, a former professional wrestler, is now taking on a new challenge: climbing mountains for kids.
Layfield is involved with and leads a program that is an extension of the Beyond Sports initiative based in London called "Beyond Rugby Bermuda". Bermuda is a long way to go from Sweetwater, but Layfield first became acquainted with the area as a means to break away.

Suitcases donated to Gateway Family Services

Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated and delivered a collection of used suitcases, toilet tissue, kleenex, paper towels, paper cups, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, soap and toothbrushes to Gateway Family Services.
Gateway ministers to individuals involved in family violence and sexual assault in a five county area, Scurry, Nolan, Mitchell, Fisher and Kent.

Contracts approved for county projects

Multiple contracts between the county and Turner Construction--for service as construction manager at risk--for the remediation of the county courthouse façade, construction of a new jail, and/or construction of new sheriff's offices was approved at the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, October 22, 2012.
However, the contracts are strictly dependent on the result of the propositions before the public on the November 6 general election ballot. While presented with the chance to enter executive session on the matter, the commissioners took immediate action.
