Cancer survivors participate in local baseball tournament

March 4, 2013

Cancer awareness was recognized at the Wood Bat Classic baseball tournament on Friday at Newman Park prior to Sweetwater's game against Wall.
Several local cancer survivors gathered on the infield for a brief ceremony where each of them threw a baseball to one of the Sweetwater or Wall players.
Among those who participated were Sweetwater player Gabriel Melendez and his grandmother, Mary Palma.

New County Treasurer sworn in

Jeanne Wells (right) was sworn into office on Monday morning as the new Nolan County Treasurer.
Wells was appointed by the county commissioners to fill the rest of the unexpired term vacated by former county treasurer Gayle Biggerstaff.
The oath of office was administered by 32nd Judicial District Judge Glen Harrison (left).

SHS meat judging team places at contest

The Sweetwater FFA meat judging team placed eighth out of 41 teams at the San Antonio contest.
Team members are Cody Chapman, Sean Morrow, Mackensey Hayes and Kyle Lambert.

Today will be very warm, as we'll see a high near 84 and mostly sunny skies. Expect breezy conditions with winds from the west-southwest at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Tonight, temperatures will drop as a cold front comes through. We'll see partly cloudy skies with a low around 39. Winds from the west at 15 to 20 mph will become northern at 25 to 30 mph. Gusts could be as high as 35 mph.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 45 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on Feb. 28, 2013.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 400 block of E. Arkansas.

Arrested by SPD:
• Thomas Castillo, 35 — Possession of controlled substance.
• Sonya Flores, 25 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served no civil papers and made three arrests on Feb. 28, 2013.

Great run ends for Highland

March 2, 2013

The Highland girls basketball team's magnificent season came to an end Friday when the Lady Hornets lost to No. 1-ranked Saltillo, 41-19, in the semifinals of the state tournament held in Austin. Highland, with players like Hannah Allen (pictured here in Friday's game), finished the season with a 31-5 record while advancing to the state tournament for the first time in history. Chief Frieda to speak at RWWT meeting

The Republican Women of West Texas will meet Tuesday, March 5, 2013. The meeting will be held at the Pioneer City-County Museum at 601 E. Third Street in Sweetwater.
Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.
Sweetwater Chief of Police, Brian Frieda will be the speaker. The public is invited to attend.

Hospital renovations continue

An update on the hospital renovations was given as part of the Administrator's report during the Nolan County Hospital District board meeting on Monday night.
David White with McKinstry, the company heading up with projects, was joined by four representatives at the meeting to offer an outlook on the current project of the new doctors' offices, as well as look back on the results from the previous work of the new medical /surgical unit.

RPMH hosts Treadmill Walkathon

For the second year in a row, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) hosted a 24-hour Treadmill Walkathon.
As cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, RPMH continues to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases through community events such as the walkathon.

Bennie Wheels to return to Sweetwater this month

Johnny Cash fans will have the opportunity to relive a Cash performance by way of Bennie Wheels, who will make his way to Sweetwater again. This Johnny Cash tribute artist will put on a show at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium Saturday, March 30, performing many of Cash’s hits. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Sweetwater Municipal Band will also be part of the musical entertainment.
