SHS grad speaks at Rotary Club

Sweetwater High School graduate Robert Reyes made a visit back to the area to offer a presentation recently at the local Rotary Club meeting.
Reyes, a 1994 graduate of SHS, is also a graduate of Texas Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is currently employed as an engineer with Halliburton in the Permian Basin, having many of his written works regarding his field published.

Local pastor named as Hendrick Medical Center Board Chair

Ward D. Hayes was recently elected as Chair for Hendrick Medical Center’s Board of Trustees. Hayes is the senior pastor for Trinity Baptist Church in Sweetwater.
As Chair, Hayes will preside over Board meetings, guide and direct the governance process, serve as the Board’s central point of official communication with the hospital’s CEO and represent the Board at hospital and community functions.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on Feb. 25, 2013.

The SPD received 22, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 800 block of E. Arizona.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 100 block of W. Arizona.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 14 — Officer in command.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Feb. 25, 2013.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Patrick Joe Miller, 26, of Longview — Warrant/criminal mischief.

Lehnert wins Regional Spelling Bee

Caleb Turner survived three rounds that eliminated most of his competitors, only for the fourth-grader to misstep with G-R-I-S-S-L-E.
Nope, that nasty part of table meat is “gristle.” And with the ding of a judge’s bell, Caleb exited left to his family waiting for him in the audience: two grandparents, mom, dad and his teacher from St. John’s Episcopal School in Odessa.
“I got it wrong, too,” his mom Beti Turner told him. “But I’m proud of you! You did good.”

SEED closes on Sweetwater Business Park property

Art Maberry, President of Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED), signs sales documents as Rachel Newberry of Beall Abstract & Title Company looks on. The sales contracts were for the sale of property from the Sweetwater Business Park to Select Energy and Jet Specialty. The Washita Valley closing also recently took place. These three sales complete the space available in the 88 acre Sweetwater Business Park. Additional acreage is being sought by SEED representatives for a new Business/Industrial Park.

Bids opened at county meeting

Bids for gravel and fuel were opened during the county commissioners' meeting held on Monday morning at the Nolan County Courthouse.
One bid was opened for the 2013 seal coating projects for the county precincts from Vulcan Materials. While the bid was advertised for gravel and AC5 asphalt, the bid--which was received by the commissioners--was solely for gravel.
Also, two bids were opened for fuel to be used by the Nolan County precincts and the Sheriff's Department. The bids from the Central Rolling Plains Co-op and WTG Fuels were received as well.

Area churches join to give back to community

Sweetwater area churches are joining together the first week in March to teach and have the students of the community give back.
The churches participating in this two-day event are the 4th and Elm Church of Christ, Corner Stone Fellowship, Emmanuel Fellowship, First United Methodist Church, the First Baptist Churches of Blackwell, Roscoe, and Sweetwater and Trinity Baptist Church.

Deadline Thursday for children’s art entries

The West Texas Art Guild is sponsoring a Children's Art Show at the County-City Library for the month of March. The show will be divided into five age groups as follows: Ages 3-5; ages 6-8; ages 9-11; ages 12-14; and ages 15-18.
The name and age of the child must be attached to the back of the artwork.
