The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 60 calls for service, issued two citations and made five arrests on Oct. 4, 2012.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Fraud — 500 block of E. Broadway.
• Theft — 300 block of SW Georgia.
• Debit/credit card abuse — 9100 block of S. I-20.
• Debit/credit card abuse — Sweetwater area.
• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of View.

Arrested by SPD:
• Charlie Jones, 41 — Public intoxication.
• Charlene Carrington, 52 — Warrants.
• Leonard Hernandez, 50 — Warrants.
• James Raney, III, 22 — Warrants.

Many attend Bitty Bop Harvest Bash

The Bitty Bop Harvest Bash benefitting Cornerstone Christian Preschool took place on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at the 4th and Elm Church of Christ parking lot. There was a hot dog supper, pumpkin painting, an apple toss, leaf printing, fall photos, a football toss, digging for treasure, a petting zoo, fall tattoos and many more activities for children. Nolan County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputies sworn in

Nolan County Sheriff David Warren recently swore in two newly approved reserve deputies.
On Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office added two more members to its roster. However, these two men won’t get paid a salary for their efforts. Stephen Smith II and Chad Mitchell were sworn in as reserve deputies for the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office.

RPMH to focus on cancer awareness at October lunch and learn seminar

Half of all men and one-third of all women in the U.S. will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Different types can affect your body in various ways, but the key to survival is through knowledge of risks and early detection.
This month, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) wants to shine light on the importance of early detection by hosting a Lunch and Learn Seminar on Wednesday, Oct. 10, that focuses on early cancer detection by educating attendees on risks and screening schedules.

Roscoe Collegiate to host Open House

October 5, 2012

The Roscoe Independent School District board of trustees, administration, and staff would like to extend an invitation to the local community and surrounding area to attend the 2012 Open House for Roscoe ISD on Tuesday, October 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Following an assembly and program in the cafetorium, student-led tours of the new facility will be provided. Refreshments will be served at this time as well.
All community and area patrons interested in viewing the new facilities are welcome and encouraged to attend. "We look forward to seeing you then and appreciate your support of Roscoe ISD."

TSTC to host team challenge cook-off

Texas State Technical College will host a team challenge cook-off on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012.
The cook-off is open to all TSTC West Texas students and employees. Team members must consist of three students and one employee.
Cooking begins at noon and judging begins at 5 p.m.
The competition will be held at TSTC Lake Lot. There will be prizes for Best Dish, Best Camp, Showmanship and Best Overall. A Market Mystery Food Box will be provided to each team. Teams can provide their own grill or cooking equipment. TSTC will have a limited supply.

Robotics teams to practice Saturday

The local extension of Texas State Technical College (TSTC) West Texas has been getting ready for its second year of their BEST robotics program on its campus which began on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2012.
The first of three events for the Big Country BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) competition was the BEST Kickoff which was Saturday, Sept. 7. Participants were introduced to the game where rules were reviewed and a demonstration was provided before entry kits were distributed to each school.

Beer truck overturns

October 5, 2012

A Coors Light truck overturned on Highway 84 yesterday, Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012.
According to authorities, the truck driver came off of the exit on Highway 84 to go west bound on Interstate 20 and took the exit too quickly. The truck then slid across the interstate and flipped over.
There were no serious injuries.

Texas Sport and Spine to provide free computerized concussion testing for SHS athletes

October 5, 2012

Dr. Jennifer Johnson, a local sports medicine physician and graduate of Sweetwater High School, along with Texas Sport and Spine in Abilene are the first to provide free computerized concussion testing to Sweetwater High School athletes and students at risk for concussion. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a computerized concussion evaluation system currently being used by the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, IRL and USA Olympic teams in addition to many area universities, and it will now be made available to Sweetwater High School.
