Many enjoyed the street dance in Roscoe "on the bricks" this past Saturday, April 21, 2012, with Eleven Hundred Springs (shown) providing the entertainment. The 1st Annual Screw Terlinquin Chili Cook-off took place earlier that day at The Lumberyard. All proceeds went toward the Open Door Child Development at the First United Methodist Church in Roscoe, a non-profit organization. A fireworks show was also displayed at the event.
Come show off your singing ability at this year's Relay For Life event, planned for Friday, May 18, 2012, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Sweetwater High School track.
Relay Idol will be held the night of the event (be prepared to stay all night) and will consist of three judges and three heats. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. The event must have a minimum of 10 sign up to take place. All ages are welcome to enter the event.
Registration will be $10 and all proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society.
In a three-to-one vote, the burn ban in Nolan County was reinstated for the next two weeks during the county commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, April 23, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
The burn ban was just one of several action items presented at the meeting. Approval was also given on the architect's plan for the sheriff's office and jail pending the overall costs of the project.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 127 calls for service, issued 25 citations and made 13 arrests from April 20-22, 2012.
The SPD received 68, 911 calls.

Campers, trailers, tents and barbecue pits could be seen all around the camp grounds at Lake Sweetwater this past weekend, April 20-22, 2012, for the 11th Annual Jaycee Roosters Motorcycle Rally and Cook-Off.
Cooks entered in several different categories including brisket, pork spare ribs, chicken and beans.

The Abilene Campus of Texas State Technical College West Texas will host a College Preview and Open House on Tuesday, April 24. The event, held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., is open to the public. TSTC West Texas advisors will lead participants on a campus tour where they will meet top-notch faculty and have the opportunity to check out first-hand the wind turbine mobile trainer the Wind Technology students train on. "Here at TSTC West Texas, we are proud to provide our students with more hands-on training than any other college in the area," said event coordinators.
On Wednesday, middle school bands from across West Texas participated in UIL Concert and Sight Reading Competition. The Sweetwater Middle School Band earned a first division plaque on their prepared music event, which was performed at Abilene Cooper High School.
âI was really pleased with how they did,â commented SMS band director Ross Grant. âThe kids really rose to the challenge. One of our pieces, âAdrenaline Engines,â was also performed by 5A Abilene High Schoolâs second band. It is actually a high school piece. Our students really pulled it off.â
The USDA Farm Service Agency is working harder than ever to assist new farmers and ranchers to succeed. Acting Texas FSA Executive Director James B. Douglass recently unveiled a new Land Contract Guarantee Program and several other tools designed to help beginning farmers and ranchers build the foundation for a successful career in agriculture.
SWEETWATER â The Texas AgriLife Extension Service office in Nolan County will host a training session beginning at 9 a.m.Â followed by testing at 1 p.m. on April 25th for persons seeking a Texas Department of Agriculture private applicator license.
The training will be conducted in the Texas State Technical College, Temple Dickson Building, Room 140.Â
âThis is only for persons who donât have a valid license and not for those needing continuing education units,â said Zachary Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County.
Freshman art student Amber Hernandez advanced from the regional level to the State Visual Art Scholastic Event with her "Watercolor Hands". The event was held at Bryan High School April 13-14 where there were 1400 high school art entries from all over the state. Amber medaled with a superior rating. This is the first year Sweetwater High School has been represented by a freshman at State VASE. In 2007 Jacob Gamel received the highest award of Gold Seal for his charcoal "Self Portrait".
