Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board are pleased to announce the awarding of thirty $1,000 scholarships to Spring 2011 Nolan County high school graduates. In making the announcement, NCF President Jerry Riggs noted that this year's recipients have increased the total number of awardees to 136 since the Scholarship Golf Classic was started seven years ago.
This year's golf classic was named in honor of one of the NCF founders Jere Lawrence. One of Jere's projects for the NCF was assisting Nolan County high school graduates to attend any Texas college or university.
Nolan County Sheriff's Office is conducting an extensive search for a missing person in southern Nolan County. Several agencies are involved in the search, including Texas DPS (including helicopter), TDCJ Canine Unit, Blackwell Volunteer Fire Department and a host of volunteers.
The Third Grade students at Southeast Elementary were honored with a TAKS Pep Rally before the students took the third grade Math and Reading TAKS test. The faculty and staff of Southeast performed original cheers and skits for the third graders and were given a school-wide cheer and send off as they prepared to take the TAKS test.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 65 calls for service, issued five citations and made 12 arrests from May 14-15, 2011.
The SPD received 12, 911 calls.

• Family violence assault — 1200 block of Town Creek.
• Theft — 1400 block of Ragland.
• Burglary of a building — 1000 block of Mustang Drive.
• Recover stolen property — 1200 block of Lou.
Arrested by SPD:
• Alfredo Diaz, 23 — Public intoxication/criminal mischief/family violence assault.
• David Palafox, 24 — False report.
• Male juvenile, 12 — Criminal mischief.

An early morning fire consumed four apartments at the Jack Lambert complex in Sweetwater on Sunday morning. Electrical problems in one of the center apartments was said to be the cause of the blaze, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. The fire began at about 3 a.m. on Sunday and Sweetwater firefighters continued to battle the fire until around noon. Four people were out of the apartments upon arrival of the Sweetwater Fire Department and firefighters made entrance and saved one dog.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office is asking for the community’s help tracking down a missing 40 year old who wandered away from his parents’ home and may be disoriented.
Doyle Lee Parsons left a home on Country Road 181 about 10 miles North of Blackwell. He was last seen by his father around 8 p.m. Saturday evening.
It's believed he may be disoriented due to a recent medication change. He's not considered violent or dangerous.
Ground broke last week on a new apartment complex being built near Southeast Elementary School called Mustang Heights Apartments. It is a proposed multi-family residential rental community to be located at East Arizona Avenue and I-20 Frontage Road. The development will be comprised of 80 units on 7.59 acres.

A new, local organization is hoping to bridge the gap in community leadership.
The Young Leaders of Sweetwater (YLS) met for a noontime meeting on Monday, May 9, 2011 at the Chamber of Commerce. The 40 and under group met to discuss their Open House slated for June 7 at First Baptist Church to be held on the 3rd floor of the Education Building.
Caleb Thompson might have some physical and neurological limitations, but in his 16 years of life, Caleb and the Thompson family have made a strong, statewide impact to improve the lives of the blind and deaf community.
Caleb is blind, deaf and lives his life as a quadriplegic. At the age of three, he was diagnosed with leukemia, and brain damage came as a result of the treatment. However, age knows no limits in the Thompson family, as Caleb has been going before the legislature in Austin since he was 5.
A sneak peek into the upcoming episode of NBC's "The Voice" for Tuesday, May 17 features Sweetwater native Tje Austin competing in an elimination bout.
Following the blind auditions of Round 1, Tje will be taking on Austin-based competitor Nakia, a 36-year-old who might not look the part but certainly sounds it. According to The Voice's website, "Nakia draws strength from his extended family and inspiration from the memory of his father. Until he passed away in 2009, Nakia's dad encouraged him to follow his dreams."
