The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3. It will be hosted by the Abilene Regional Airport, but will be held at the Chamber of Commerce, located at 810 East Broadway.
The Abilene Regional Airport is located at 2933 Airport Blvd., Ste. 200. They are owned and operated by the City of Abilene.
Don Green is the Director of Aviation. The Abilene Regional Airport serves sixteen counties over a 90-mile radius, with the Abilene city staff and tenant staff totaling an approximate 500 employees on the property.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital announced plans to implement a new tobacco-free policy on all campuses, effective Jan. 1,2013.
Hospital leaders say the new policy reflects the health system's mission, "We are eliminating tobacco-use on our properties to provide a healthy and safe environment for employees, patients and visitors and to promote positive health behaviors," said Donna Boatright, administrator at RPMH.
As a way to promote education beyond high school, students, faculty and staff at Sweetwater ISD campuses are urged to wear their favorite college shirt on the first school day of each month as part of College Culture Day.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 139 calls for service, issued 11 citations and made 10 arrests from Sept. 28-30, 2012.
The SPD received 86, 911 calls.

First graders at Southeast Elementary School in Mrs. Amy Nixon's and Mrs. Bethany Bryan's classes put together care packages for troops over in Afghanistan.
Christopher Soles, father to student Madison Soles, and Mrs. Bryan's husband are two of the soldiers who will benefit from the care packages.
Mrs. Nixon and Mrs. Bryan had their students bring snacks, toiletries, magazines, movies, games and stationary to make up the care packages. High school students and community members donated as well.
Representatives from the Deaf Action Center (DAC) in Abilene will be at the health department on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. to talk about their services. The DAC serves people who are deaf and hard of hearing with a comprehensive range of services. They will educate and train people in coping and communication strategies, assistive devices and Relay Texas Service and more. DAC assists the hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind, vision impaired, speech impaired and mobility impaired, in receiving free communication devices from the State of Texas.
At the Sept. 19, 2012 meeting of the Blackwell Education Foundation, $67,891.95 was awarded to graduates of Blackwell High School. Students who graduate from Blackwell High School have the opportunity to earn up to $3,000 per year of attendance.
The scholarships are paid each semester to colleges, universities, technical schools or job training programs to assist students in furthering their education and making them "job ready."

This year there will again be two back-to-back fundraising events associated with the Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater to raise dollars for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. The Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at a new location, the Sweetwater Country Club, on Tuesday evening, Oct. 30. The following day on Wednesday the regular Round-Up sale will be held at Sweetwater Auction.
