Hospital employees open canned food drive up for community participation

As Thanksgiving Day nears in just a couple of weeks, employees at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) are thinking about area residents who might not have the opportunity to enjoy a holiday dinner. In an effort to help those less fortunate, employee organizers are inviting the community to participate in their “1,000 Cans of Caring” canned food drive.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued seven citations and made one arrest on Nov. 7, 2012.

The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 500 block of E. Alabama.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 900 block of E. 17th.
• Information — 400 block of E. Avenue D.

Arrested by SPD:
• Anthony Wells, 35 — Warrants.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 15 calls for service, served no civil papers and made no arrests on Nov. 7, 2012.

Calls for service:
• Traffic hazard — Highway 70.

RPMH hosts diabetes support group meeting

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) held their diabetes support group meeting on Tuesday afternoon, November 6, 2012 in the hospital classroom. The presentation given was "Reading Food Labels", given by Tasha Baxter, the Consumer Family Science agent with the Nolan County Extension Office.
When looking at the ingredients on a food label, they are usually listed by the heaviest and then descend. Diabetics should be wary if sugar or another form of sweetener is close to the top of the list.

Facebook fans respond to election results

The power of social media was ever-present during the 2012 election, as early results and projections came across television and computer screens on Tuesday evening.
And at the Sweetwater Reporter, we decided to join in on the fun and ask our Facebook friends what their thoughts were--as the coverage continued, when Ohio was projected for the incumbent president, and when the dust slightly settled on Wednesday morning.

Basye named Preceptor of the Year

Ted Basye, owner and pharmacist at The Medicine Place in Sweetwater, has been named “Preceptor of the Year” for 2012 by the students at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy in Abilene. Mr. Basye has been working with students from the school since 2010. 
As part of their education requirements at Texas Tech, students pursuing a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree must complete a six-week long clerkship in a rural community setting.

• Family violence assault — 1500 block of Hughes.
Arrested by SPD:
• Raquel Sharrock, 19 — Criminal trespassing.

New publisher welcomed

Glenn Stifflemire, a Texas native with more than 40 years newspaper experience, has been named publisher of the Big Spring Herald and Sweetwater Reporter.
Stifflemire's appointment was announced by Terri Leifeste, a vice president with Horizon Publications, which owns both newspapers.
“We're very excited to have Glenn join our company,” Leifeste said. “We believe his many years of experience in the newspaper industry will prove to be a benefit for the Herald and the Reporter and their readers.”
