Sixth Annual Wind Festival this weekend

The Sixth Annual West Texas Wind Festival is expected to be another event in which families from the surrounding areas can gather for many activities on the streets of Roscoe. The free event will feature headline act country music legend Gene Watson and Band. Canyon Rim will also perform during the event, along with local and regional talent. The live music will begin about 2 p.m. The Tennessee Stiffs will go on at 6 p.m. During the event there will also be a kids area (bounce houses).

Hobbs Homecoming nears

Hobbs School and community will have their homecoming beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20. There will be entertainment, a short business meeting, a time to recognize the classes, exes traveling the longest distance and memorials — all emceed by Hobbs ex "Doc" Hardin and the 2012 Hobbs exes president Jerry Trice.
A catered meal will be served at noon. There will be a choice of brisket or chicken and the cost os $10 per plate.

Walkers still needed for Saturday event

This year's American Heart Walk has been set for Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at the Sweetwater High School track. The event will help raise funds to fight cardiovascular diseases. According to event organizer Jerrie Gee, walkers are still needed for the event. "People can still register and enter to walk on Saturday. If you raise $100, you get a T-shirt. Any amount of money raised is appreciated."

SMS thrives with new campus updates, programs

Sweetwater Middle School gave a campus report during the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees' meeting on Monday night, October 15, with a wide variety of change on the positive front being presented.
The presentation was made by the school's administrators, principal Jeff Withrow and vice principal Danette Price. After a number of changes and obstacles last school year, SMS wanted to bring fun and excitement back to the campus.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 34 calls for service, issued one citation and made four arrests on Oct. 16, 2012.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jackie Norris, 56 — Use/inhale or ingest volatile substance.
• Crystal Guzman, 27 — Warrants.
• Aubrey Donte Smith, 34 — Impede breath and warrant.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served three civil papers and made no arrests on Oct. 16, 2012.

Calls for service:
• Welfare concern — I-20 east bound.
• Theft — CR 117/Cemetery Road.

Denise Shavandy's "Moroccan Chicken Tagine with Preserved Lemon and Olives"

“This fragrant, light dish will wake up your wintertime,” says Texas State Technical College Culinary Institute Chef Denise Shavandy. “This meal can be made ahead of time, it reheats nicely. Traditionally the dish is cooked in a tagine pot, but can be cooked in any covered pot or slow cooker.”
“This is a nice, moist dish. We want to keep the liquid, so make sure your dish remains covered while it cooks as noted in the recipe,” shared Shavandy.

Libertarian running for Congressional seat

When voters head to the polls on Tuesday, November 6, two names will stare them in the face for United States Representative in District 19: the well-known Republican incumbent Randy Neugebauer and Libertarian candidate Richard "Chip" Peterson.
Peterson is currently a Professor Emeritus at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He is a former Professor of Finance at the university, where he is also the holder of the I. Wylie and Elizabeth Briscoe chair of bank management.
