The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 54 calls for service, issued six citations and made no arrests on June 13, 2012.

The SPD received 13, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a building — 2800 block of W. Alabama.
• Information only — 300 block of Oak.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on June 13, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Patricia Ann Pedregon, 45, of Sweetwater — Warrants/expired annual inspection, fail to appear, public intoxication, disorderly conduct.

Five dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has five puppies available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a female mixed breed dog and five sibling Chinese Crested puppies — all female — that were abandoned at the shelter. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Nolan Nursing residents take a historical visit

Residents of Nolan Nursing and Rehab recently enjoyed a day of fun at the Pioneer Museum. Pictured are Donald McGregor; Myrtis Scott; Doris Ondrusek, volunteer; Ella Sedberry; Sandra Good; Billie Irving; and Lisa Seals, volunteer. Youth volunteers are Darian Carr, Caitlyn Carr and Bailley Bromley.

Roscoe to host Independence Day celebration

Area residents are once again invited to join in the festivities "On The Bricks" in historic downtown Roscoe to celebrate our great nation.

Library keeps young minds thriving

Several area fourth through sixth grade students tried out some fun experiments led by the staff at the County-City Library on Wednesday, June 13, 2012.
Mayra Garcia and Erica Caballero — "mad scientists" — led the students in the experiments. Garcia is shown helping the students in the magic writing experiment in which the students wrote with lemon juice on paper. They could not see the writing until iodine was put on the paper and made the "ink" show through.

• Forgery — 200 block of SE Georgia.
• Family violence assault — 500 block of Newman.

Arrested by SPD:
• Kenneth McCann, 36 — Warrant.

Artfully Abilene's CALF to begin tomorrow

June 13, 2012

On June 14-17, 2012, Abilene will host Artfully Abilene's "Children's Art & Literacy Festival" (CALF) featuring Dr. Seuss.
This idea emanated from the The National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) planned exhibition of the original illustrations from "The Lorax" on June 1-Aug. 31, 2011. To enhance this Seussian experience they have also secured funding for "The Art of Dr. Seuss Retrospective," as well as the Seuss Sculpture Touring Garden.

Highland NHS students raise money for Relay

Several of Highland's National Honor Society members participated in the recent Relay for Life in Sweetwater.
Highland's team name was 'The Olympians'. Their motto was "Go for the Gold - Fighting for a Cure."
The team was made up of National Honor Society members Haley Hill, Brenden Huckabee, Kara Hughey, Jessica McCain, Brianne O'Ryan, Jordan Rowan, Putri Soedarsono, Lora Stewart and Julia Tibbit. The team captain was the NHS advisor, Leigh Petty.

McKenzie, Peek to continue city commission service

A public hearing was held during the regular monthly meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission on Tuesday morning, June 12, 2012 at City Hall.
The open forum was the first of two regarding the proposed annexation of a 53.14 acre tract of land, located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hopkins Road and Interstate 20. The petition is from Love's Truck Stop for an incoming site.

Speed limit lowered on Southern Heights

The Nolan County Commissioners approved for a change to be made on Southern Heights Road during their regular meeting on Monday morning, June 11, 2012, held at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Robert Smith, a resident on the road, spoke to the commissioners about an ongoing problem which has been tolerated for at least the past 20 years. He said that he has seen several cars go airborne on the road, with other vehicles going through fences and even into a ditch.
