AUSTIN â€“ The Texas Department of Public Safety announced that three of the Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitives or sex offenders were captured within the last week. Fugitives Daniel Pineda, Jr., 26, and Trinidad Diaz Mermella, 46, were both arrested on Tuesday, July 24, in separate incidents after tips led to their capture. Additionally, a Texas 10 Most Wanted Sex Offender, Brandon Gary Johnson, 42, was arrested last week in Dallas.
The West Texas Innovation Network is co-sponsoring an Entrepreneur Boot Camp to assist new business start-ups. The boot camp will be held Friday, August 10, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hunter Welcome Center on the Abilene Christian University (ACU) campus.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 34 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on July 24, 2012.
The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

SWEET H2O CONCERT ON OAK: An event is being planned to offer the community of Sweetwater â€śsomething to doâ€ť this summer â€” an event in Sweetwater and for Sweetwater, Nolan County, and all of our region, that celebrates our place in West Texas. This is an opportunity to come together and improve our quality of life, to promote the arts and entertainment, boost our cultural awareness, support the local economy and to just have fun.
A public meeting was held on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 by TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) on the project rehabilitating Lamar Street (BS 70-G) in the administration classroom at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Starting at 1 p.m., TxDOT staff was on hand at the informal, open-house meeting to answer questions and take comments. Citizens could come and go as they pleased to view exhibits of the proposed project while offering input.
The Sweetwater City Commission approved the proposed tax rate for the 2012 tax year during their meeting on Tuesday morning, July 24, 2012 at City Hall.
The approved, proposed tax rate for the 2012 tax year now stands at $.4630 (46.30 cents) per $100 valuation. City Manager Eddie Brown noted that the rate had been at 48 cents for the past five year, but the increase of valuations led to the decrease of the tax rate. This new tax rate will also come in under the rollback tax rate.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on July 23, 2012.
The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on July 23, 2012.

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau recently gave a donation of $16,500 to the West Texas Rodeo Association.
Several rodeos were held in April through July leading up to the Finals, July 20-22, 2012, at the Nolan County Coliseum.

One person entered a plea to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, July 23, 2012.
Henry William Shelton, along with his attorney Paul Hanneman, pled true to revoking his probation. He was originally put on probation on July 21, 2009, for possession of a controlled substance, namely methamphetamine, a state jail felony.
The Nolan County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Monday morning, July 23, 2012 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Among the action items presented, approval was given toward the renewal of their health insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) for 2012-2013. Tommy Morris and Nancy Johnson with the company discussed the various rates and credits from the health, dental and life policies.
