Budget approved at SEED meeting

July 11, 2012

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their monthly meeting on Monday morning, July 9, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce.
Among the action items from the meeting was the 2012-2012 FY (fiscal year) budget, which was approved. A sample budget had been discussed at the June meeting, with a complete budget prepared and proposed to the board by SEED Executive Director Ken Becker during this meeting.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued five citations and made two arrests on July 9, 2012.

The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

• Jamie O'Connor, 26 — Warrant.
• Jay Walton, 47 — Public intoxication.

Avondale Baptist Church hosts block party

July 10, 2012

Avondale Baptist Church hosted a block party on the corner of Hailey and Lou Streets, across from the Village Apartments, on Saturday, July 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Church members set up games with prizes, made cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones and hot dogs for lunch.

All class reunion slated for September

July 10, 2012

Another “All Class Reunion” for Homecoming 2012 is planned for Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2 p.m. to midnight at the Sweetwater High School Cafeteria, according to Linda Kiser Browning Miller, event director.
Jeff Stein of KXOX Radio will be the emcee, and Big Boys BBQ will cater the supper at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and a short program will be held at 5 p.m. After the barbecue supper, J.B. Cloud of KBCY Radio of Abilene will serve as D.J. for the music and dance beginning at about 7:30 p.m. The D.J. will present music from the 50’s to the present.

Immunization Fun Day tomorrow

Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E.12th, will have their annual immunization fun day event on Wednesday, July 11 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-6 p.m. This is a normal day for immunization clinic but the health department has set this day to emphasize the importance of making sure your child’s immunizations are up-to-date.

Burn ban reinstated for Nolan County

Six county employees were recognized for their service during the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting held at the Nolan County Courthouse on Monday morning, July 9, 2012.
Those in attendance to receive their service awards were Jan Bartlett for her 20 years as the Justice of the Peace Chief Deputy, David McDonald for his 15 years of service as Sheriff Chief Deputy, and Robert McReynolds for his 10 years as the Coliseum Manager.

Several county employees were honored with a Service Award during the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, July 9, 2012, held at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Pictured is Jan Bartlett with Judge Tim Fambrough; Bartlett has served as the Justice of the Peace Chief Deputy for the past 20 years. Also at the meeting, David McDonald was awarded a 15 year service pin for his role as Sheriff Chief Deputy.
Robert McReynolds was also recognized at the meeting on Monday morning for his 10 years as the Nolan County Coliseum Manager.

Fireworks, parade highlight Roscoe Independence Day celebration

Area residents once again enjoyed the festivities “On The Bricks” in historic downtown Roscoe to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday, July 7, 2012.
A parade kicked off the activities, followed by food, crafts and kid’s activities in Old Town Park and a Mud Bog at George Parks Field. The live music “On The Bricks” was provided by Greg Maldo and Curtis Potter.
The evening ended with a bang with a fireworks show.

RPMH raises awareness of UV safety

As the official summer season gets underway, much of the nation has been breaking records with 100 degree temperatures. While many continue to plan outdoor activities, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is urging locals to protect themselves from the sun’s heat and ultraviolet rays, preventing heat exhaustion and skin damage.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are many precautions Americans can take to protect themselves from UV rays.
