Ratings discussed at RPMH Board of Directors meeting

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for their regularly monthly meeting on Monday night, Feb. 27, 2012 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The meeting opened with the annual 2011 Human Resource (HR) report that was given by Gay Nell Cherry, the hospital's HR director. Reports were given on patient care providers, non-patient care providers and turnover statistics from the past year.

Statewide gas price average increases a nickel

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is a nickel more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The current statewide average is $3.57.
The national average is $3.74, increasing 13 cents more than the average last week. The statewide average price is 17 cents less than the national average. The most expensive gasoline average in the state is in Dallas at $3.59. Amarillo is reporting the least expensive average in the state at $3.41 for a gallon of regular unleaded. 

USDA announces CRP general sign-up

Acting Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services (FFAS) Michael Scuse announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will conduct a four-week Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general signup, beginning on March 12 and ending on April 6. CRP has a 25-year legacy of successfully protecting the nation's natural resources through voluntary participation, while providing significant economic and environmental benefits to rural communities across the United States.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued three citations and made two arrests on Feb. 29, 2012.

The SPD received 36, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 100 block of SW Georgia.
• 900 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Open container in vehicle x2 — 900 block of Lamar.
• Fraud — 900 block of Lamar.
• Criminal trespass — 1900 block of Douglas.
Arrested by SPD:
• Raymond Frank Gonzales, 20 — Accident involving injury.
• Male juvenile, 12 — Possession of marijuana in a drug free zone.

Recipe of the Week: Pear Perfection

March 1, 2012

Yogurt with Pear and Coconut
Makes 4 servings
Juice of 1 lemon
1/3 cup unsweetened shredded
coconut
2 tablespoons graham cracker
crumbs
1/2 cup Grape-Nuts or granola
cereal
1 tablespoon granulated stevia
extract, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 ripe pears, such as Anjou or
Bosc, slightly firm to the touch
3 cups 2% plain Greek yogurt
In medium bowl, combine lemon juice, coconut, graham cracker crumbs, cereal, sweetener and cinnamon.
Peel, core and finely chop pears.
Spoon yogurt into 4 bowls and top

Walkathon raises money for AHA

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) in Sweetwater recently held their first annual 24-Hour Treadmill Walkathon on Friday, Feb. 17-Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 at the hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.
With February set aside as American Heart Month, the local hospital joined the nationwide effort to bring awareness to cardiovascular diseases. The American Heart Association (AHA) promotes physical activity and a healthy diet to lower the risk of developing heart disease while increasing overall health.

Parents’ involvement matters in school

No matter how smart or gifted a child is, the involvement of the child’s parents or guardians in his or her school is vital to the success of that child. Most schools and educational organizations encourage parental involvement. There are even state policies in regards to parental involvement in the schools. That’s because parental involvement has proven to increase student success and make schools better.

Five dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has five dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a family of Shepherd mix puppies — two male and two female brothers and sisters —and their mother.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

The SPD received 25, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of Beall.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1300 block of Wardale.
Arrested by SPD:
• Jerry Meneses, 26 — Public intoxication.
• Ryan Ruiz, 20 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served four civil papers and made one arrest on Feb. 28, 2012.

Local tattoo artist wins again

Sheri Baugh, owner of Sheri’s Texas Tattoo in Sweetwater, is pictured with her two new trophies. She and husband and fellow tattoo artist, Hunter, attended the West Texas Tattoo Convention held on Feb. 24-26, in San Angelo.
Coming in first place once again is Baugh’s tattoo of Willie Nelson. The tattoo won first place in the portrait category.
Baugh also won second place in the small black and grey category. The tattoo is of her husband Hunter’s brother, Greg Crawford — a pastor of Covenant Ranch Fellowship.
