The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 28 calls for service, issued one citation and made two arrests on June 19, 2012.

The SPD received 37, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1100 block of Hiawatha.
• Theft — 1700 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 500 block of Robert Lee.
• Runaway — 800 block of E. Avenue D.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 15 — Runaway.
• Male juvenile, 13 — Family violence assault.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served nine civil papers and made one arrest on June 19, 2012.

Three jailed in district court

June 20, 2012

Three were jailed and four were probated during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, with District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuting the cases.

RPMH celebrates enhancements and addition to facilities

As the healthcare needs of Nolan County continues to grow and evolve, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) remains committed to serving the region in various capacities. As such, the hospital will hold a special event on Thursday, June 21, 2012, with a ribbon cutting and ground breaking on two projects that will allow the hospital to continue its mission.

Porter retires after 35 years of service to SFD

For Jim Porter, the retiring Assistant Fire Chief from the Sweetwater Fire Department (SFD), it seems as if family has always been connected to his role--before, during and after his service.
For the past 35 years, Porter has served the community as a fireman; since 1986, he has been in the role of Assistant Fire Chief. However, during his stint, he was able to work alongside his father Ronald at the fire station.

• Theft — 1200 block of Ragland.
• Unattended death — 500 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Keenan Rook, 27 — Evading, theft, possession of controlled substance, failure to identify.
• Gary Dalton Flynn, 38 — Local warrants.
• Dolores Williams, 21 — Local warrants.
• Kari Southern, 34 — Theft, public intoxication.

Deadline to apply for RSLSP extended

June 19, 2012

The deadline for eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay (RSLSP) has been extended to Oct. 21, 2012, providing those eligible more time to apply for the pay under the program guidelines.

Hospital track closed for new construction

June 19, 2012

Due to the construction of a new medical office building at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, the walking track and related areas will be closed beginning June 18, 2012. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital apologizes for any inconvenience and looks forward to the reopening of this area to the public at the completion of construction.

SEED board discusses preliminary budget

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday morning, June 18, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce.
Kirstin Smith, the Asst. Marketing/Admin. Director, gave an update, recapping SEED's recent trip to the 2012 Windpower Conference that was held in Atlanta, Georgia. The show went well, with around 12,000 in attendance. While attendance was cited as lower than usual, the quality of the show was one of the best in recent years.

FSA County Committee nominations begin

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that county committee election nominations began June 15, 2012. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2012 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.
