Happy New Year!Â That is the cry heard around the world this week.Â Young and old watched as the ball fell in Time Square, bells rang, people hugged, kissed, and sang, â€śShould old acquaintance be forgot and ever brought to mind . . .â€ť, and 2012 was gone as 2013 appeared.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce announced its Lighting Contest Winners. They are as follows:
North of Broadway and East of Hailey:
First Place: Crystal Meneses (Anna and George Underwood) at 1419 Edgewood.
Second Place: Chris Hamlin at 1001 Lou Ave.
North of Broadway and West of Hailey:

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) is currently in the process of reviewing options for a new in-car video system. According to Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda, the system currently used is in need of replacement due to a shortened shelf life due to the impact felt on the electronics when riding over train tracks.
Sweetwater received a slight amount of snow on Thursday evening and early Friday morning, making it the first snow for 2013 and covering Sweetwater neighborhoods with a hint of white.
Today's forecast is mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. South wind is expected to be around 10 mph, according to the national Weather Service in San Angelo.
The Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation District is offering low-cost Afghan Pine seedlings and wildlife packets for spring planting. These trees can be used to establish windbreaks and for protective screens.
They will be taking orders through Feb. 1, 2013. There is a limited supply so place your order soon.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on Jan. 2, 2013.
The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

The wintry weather is here and today we have a 20% chance of light snow before noon. Otherwise, we'll have mostly cloudy skies with a high near 40 and southern winds at 5 to 10 mph.

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital welcomed the 2013 New Year Baby on at 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1.
Clarissa Nicholee Martinez weighed eight pounds, four ounces and was 20.25 inches long. She is the daughter of Courtney and Imelda Martinez of Roscoe. She was also welcomed by a brother, Julian Martinez, 3. Grandparents are Martina and Juan Herrera of Roscoe, Melody Martinez of Sweetwater and the late Robert Martinez.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital recently implemented a new tobacco-free policy on all campuses, effective Jan. 1, 2013.
Hospital leaders say the new policy reflects the health system's mission, "We are eliminating tobacco-use on our properties to provide a healthy and safe environment for employees, patients and visitors and to promote positive health behaviors," said Donna Boatright, administrator at RPMH.
Residents of Nolan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sweetwater celebrated with refreshments, ginger ale and games focused on well wishes for 2013.
