The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 35 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on Feb. 18, 2013.

The SPD received 46, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 900 block of Neff.
• 900 block of Lamar.
• 100 block of Musgrove.

Calls for service:
• Criminal trespass — 1200 block of Ragland.
• Assault — 100 block of Industrial.
• Theft — 100 block of E Fourth.
• Unattended death — 800 block of E Thirteenth.

Arrested by SPD:
• Female juvenile, 16 — Violate terms of release.

Students take a turn on Texting and Driving Simulator this week at TSTC

(West Texas) – Reality Education for Drivers will be at TSTC West Texas Campuses for their YOLO (You Only Live Once) campaign. The group is bringing awareness to the dangers of texting and driving. Don’t believe how dangerous it is? Test it out yourself in the texting and driving simulator this week at a TSTC campus near you. Sweetwater Campus: Tuesday, February 19, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Student Center Concourse
Abilene Campus: Wednesday, February 20, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Conference Room

East Ridge students raise over $3,000 at “Jump Rope for Heart”

Seventy-five East Ridge students collected over $3,000 to donate to the American Heart Association during their recent "Jump Rope for Heart" event.
The five students with the largest donations were: (back row) Katie Reed, Jaxon Gilmore, Paula Tovar, and (front row) Aubrey Galindo and Christyn Allen.
Thanks to all the children who participated in helping this worthwhile organization!

Increased activity seen from oil-related business

During the February meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, Eddie Brown stated in his monthly City Manager's report that Code Enforcement and building inspections have show an increase in activity, as oil-related business continues to expand. Seeing the most growth has been Bradford Lane and Interstate 20.
A multitude of information has been presented during the Cline Shale meetings held in surrounding counties for the past few months, in which the February meeting was held in Colorado City.
"We don't know what to expect," said Brown in regards to change.

Texas Midwest Day at the Capital

Mayor Greg Wortham, SEED Executive Ken Becker, SEED Marketing Dir. Kirstin Smith, and Jeff Howard from TSTC joined more than 100 people representing cities in the Texas Midwest region in Austin on Feb. 5th participating in “Texas Midwest Day at the Capitol”. Representatives for the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup were at the Capitol promoting the annual event and were able to take time to join the TMCN group for photos.

The SPD received 60, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1700 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Indecency with a child by contact — 1000 block of Silas.
• Duty on striking unattended vehicle — 500 block of E Alabama.
• Criminal mischief — Coral Cove.

Arrested by SPD:
• Cory Martin, 35 — Driving while intoxicated, third or more.
• Juan Leanos, 22 — City warrants.
• Decoreyon Thomas, 21 — Possession of marijuana.

Registration opens for Suddenlink charity fishing tournament

Registration opened for the fifth annual Suddenlink Open Tony Gibson Memorial Fishing Tournament, to be held Saturday, March 2, at the Concho Pavilion on Lake O.H. Ivie, 24282 County Road 4763, in Millersview. Once again Joe Thomas, host of “Stihl’s Reel in the Outdoors” on Outdoor Channel – America’s Leader In Outdoor TV, will award prizes and greet competitors.

RPMH hosts Second Treadmill Walkathon

For the second year in a row, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) will be hosting a 24-hour Treadmill Walkathon. The hospital announced that the event is scheduled to kickoff at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 and run through 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, at the hospital’s Cardiac Rehab Center.
As cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States, RPMH continues to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases through community events such as the walkathon.

Michael Lawrence was named the Sweetwater Mustangs Player of the Week.
