Outstanding female citizen named at Chamber Banquet

Jan Smith was named the 2012 Outstanding Female Citizen at the 48th Annual Chamber Banquet on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012.
Last year's Outstanding Female Citizen, Leah Andrews, made the presentation for the 2012 Outstanding Female Citizen, Jan Toland Smith.
"The 2012 Female Outstanding Citizen is truly one of the most inspirational women I have ever met. When I speak with other folks about her, without fail the conversation always turns to the same things. Everyone mentions some of the same endearing and admirable traits," said Andrews.

Cyrus Dale McCreight was named the 2012 Outstanding Male Citizen at the 48th Annual Chamber Banquet on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012.
Last year's Outstanding Male Citizen, Vershell Smith, made the presentation for the 2012 Outstanding Male Citizen, Cyrus Dale McCreight.
"President Foster, members of the Chamber and guests, I have a gentleman to announce," said Smith. "This person is a rather private individual, but full of life. He is smart, sociable, religious and some say, very complex."

Outstanding business named at Chamber Banquet

Roscoe State Bank was named the 2012 Business of the Year at the 48th Annual Chamber Banquet on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012.
Last year's Business of the Year, Wind Energy Turbine Services (WETS), made the presentation for the 2012 Business of the Year, Roscoe State Bank. Reece McCain made the presentation.
"In 1906, Theodore Roosevelt was President of the United States. The Model T by Ford wasn’t in production yet. People haven’t ever heard the term World War. But in early December of that same year, this 2012 Business of the Year opened its doors for the first time 106 years ago," he stated.

Burn ban to remain lifted

The burn ban was approved to remain lifted in Nolan County during the county commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, September 24 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Just last week--at their meeting on September 17, the decision was made to lift the burn ban. The continued lifting of the ban will remain in effect for the next two weeks, or until the next appointed meeting date.

One dies in wreck, others transported

September 25, 2012

Five transports were made after an one-vehicle wreck on Highway 84, north of Roscoe around 2:30 p.m.
Two patients were flown via helicopter to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. One patient was in serious condition when flown and later died from injuries sustained in the wreck while the other was in stable condition.
Three other patients were taken to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital via ambulance. All were in stable condition.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 109 calls for service, issued two citations and made 10 arrests from Sept. 21-23, 2012.

The SPD received 51, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 200 block of Grape.

Calls for service:
• Striking a fixed object — 200 block of Grape.
• Burglary of a building — 800 block of E. 17th.
• Theft — 1600 block of Elm.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 15 — Possession of marijuana in a drug free zone.
• Joshua McQueen, 17 — Trespassing on school property.
• Michael Amos, 49 — Public intoxication.
• Mary Ballenger, 35 — Warrant.

Special flag presented to Jaycees

At the Annual Sweetwater Jaycee Awards Banquet held Sept. 22, 2012, U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Eddy Gossett, along with U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Albert Rodriguez, presented a flag flown on the battlefield in Afghanistan to the outgoing and incoming presidents of the Jaycee and Rooster organizations.
Staff Sgt. Gossett and Lance Corporal Rodriguez are both Sweetwater natives and recently returned from deployment.

See You at the Pole™ is Sept. 26

“AWAKEN”(from Ephesians 3:14-21) is the theme for See You at the Pole 2012, the annual global day of student prayer. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7 a.m. at schools across the United States.
This is the 22nd anniversary for See You at the Pole, a student-initiated and student-led movement that started in the Ft. Worth suburb of Burleson, Texas in 1990. SYATP brings students to their school flagpoles to intercede for their leaders, schools and families, asking God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and city.

SMS offering electives classes

In the midst of their technological transition, Sweetwater Middle School is making even more headway by announcing a wide range of electives classes to be offered at all grade levels.
Starting on Monday, September 24, the elective classes will take the place during the regular tutorial hour--fifth period, with the mindset of learning more about students' "unique experiences, interests and learning styles" in order to "guide, support and motivate" them.
