FCC regulations leave church TV program in limbo

A local television program is in danger of signing off due to some federal regulations.
For over 40 years, Broadway Baptist Church in Sweetwater has been airing a thirty-minute program every Sunday morning at 9 a.m. on KTXS. But after January 6, the program has not aired, following a letter from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) in which the show's exemption status--which deals with closed captioning--had changed.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued four citations and made three arrests on Jan. 23, 2013.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 1100 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 15 — Disruption of classroom.
• Courtney Frausto, 23 — Theft.
• Dustin Wells, 27 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on Jan. 23, 2013.

A light cold front has come in, bringing today's high down to around 56. Expect partly sunny skies and northern winds at 5 to 10 mph as well.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low around 38. Winds will be from the north around 5 mph, shifting to the east-northeast after midnight.

Mammoth information sought

"If he had a toothache with a tooth that size, he probably just laid down and died."
This was one of several comments about the prehistoric animal tusks uncovered in May 1967 on Vergil Redden's land north of the Nolan County Coliseum, as dirt contractors were digging out an area near the stock pond so the pond could be drained.
Workers uncovered one tusk that crumbled easily when touched. Redden decided to wait for more expert help before doing more digging.

Hospital board approves new wrist bands, policy

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met on Monday night at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), in which they approved a policy regarding the new condition alert wrist bands.
According to state requirements, hospitals must have three different color-coded wristbands that alert medical staff on a patient's allergies, fall risk and their desire to not be resuscitated. The hospital will also be adding two additional bracelets that will alert medical staff on latex allergies and restricted extremities.

Region 14 ESC Head Start annual report to the public now available for viewing

Region 14 Education Service Center Head Start announces that its Annual Report to the Public for 2011-2012 is available for viewing. This report is part of the federal standards for providing an annual report each year for school districts, parents, community members and any other interested agencies.
This report includes data on children served, curriculum, funding information, results from the 2009 Federal review and governance.

High flu activity means residents should seek treatment, get vaccinated

With reports of flu widespread across Texas, state health officials urge people to get a flu shot now and take other steps to protect themselves from the flu and its possible complications.
“Texas, like much of the country, saw an early start to the flu season and continues to experience a high level of flu and flu-like illness,” said DSHS Commissioner Dr. David Lakey. “The best thing people can do to protect themselves is to get a dose of flu vaccine now. There is plenty of vaccine available.”
