A total of 45 kids signed up for the kids fishing tournament on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Lake Sweetwater, sponsored by Pappy's Bait and Grill Shop and the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club. The event was held at the Lake Sweetwater public boat ramp, with the competition running from 8-10:30 a.m. Prizes were awarded for the Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish and Outstanding Angler to the following age groups: 3-5 year olds, 6-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds and 13-16 year olds. Judges for the competition were Mark Morgan and Jason Bond.
This year, as part of the TSTC (Texas State Technical College) Women's Leadership Institute's (WLI) mission to support the TSTC Values, each TSTC location â€” Waco, Harlingen, Marshall and West Texas (Abilene, Brownwood, Breckenridge, Sweetwater â€” will do a community project on Saturday, June 23, 2012.
The Sweetwater group spoke with Russell Jones, City of Sweetwater Director of Public Works, about painting the picnic tables at Newman Park and he was thrilled with the idea. He has also asked that the pillars of the pavilion be painted as well.
The America Cancer Society would like to say a special thank you to all of those that braved the West Texas wind to come out and support the 10th annual Nolan and Scurry County Relay For Life. The event kicked off with almost 30 cancer survivors taking to the track for a victory lap. Their caregivers met them half-way and completed the lap hand-in-hand with their survivors. At dusk, the track was lined with hundreds of lit luminaria bags to honor those that have fought cancer and to remember those that lost their battles.
A summer family event called Babylon: Danielâ€™s Courage in Captivity will be hosted at Lamar Street Baptist Church from Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 22, for children in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade.

Cancer Services Network (CSN) plans to broadcast CancerCareâ€™s ConnectÂ® Workshop Part III of Cancer Survivorship: Living With, Though and Beyond Cancer. This workshop entitled Changing Roles and Responsibilities for Caregivers is scheduled on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, from noon to 1:30 p.m. This session is for cancer survivors, their families and friends. Information will be shared to help them cope with concerns that arise after treatment.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued eight citations and made five arrests on June 14, 2012.

While friends and family plan their summer road trips thereâ€™s good news again this week for drivers across the Lone Star State.Â The current average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Texas is now $3.33, which is five cents less than last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.Â Drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.51, while drivers in Fort Worth are paying the least at $3.27. Drivers in Sweetwater are currently paying $3.29.
A ribbon cutting and open house took place on Thursday, June 14, 2012, for Hendrick Medical Supply to celebrate their Grand Re-Opening.
The medical supply company has expanded their store, with the front of the store now facing Lamar Street, on the corner of Lamar and East Arizona Street near Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The second public hearing regarding the proposed annexation for property for the incoming Love's Truck Stop was held on Thursday morning, June 14, 2012 during the Sweetwater City Commission meeting at City Hall.
The first meeting was held during the monthly meeting of the city commissioners that occurred on Tuesday morning, June 12. The land is 53.14 acres and is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hopkins Road and Interstate 20.
