Weekend weather for Sweetwater

Chances of rain will be with us all weekend in the Sweetwater area, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday, along with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 94. Winds will be south-southwest around 5 mph.
Friday night, expect a low around 73 under mostly cloudy skies. Winds will come from the south at 5 to 10 mph, shifting to light, south-southeast winds. Chance of rain and thunderstorms will be 30%.
Saturday, our chances of rain peak at 50% with a high near 94 and mostly cloudy. Winds will be from the south-southeast ranging from 5 to 10 mph.

Publisher speaks at Kiwanis meeting

Rarely will a media outlet make the news itself, but during the weekly Kiwanis Club meeting on Wednesday, August 15, the local newspaper was the topic of discussion.
The program for the day was given by Terri Leifeste, the interim publisher at the Sweetwater Reporter. Joined by her husband Alvin--who also oversees the local newspaper, the positive changes being made were presented to the civic club.

DA discusses guilty plea, probation process

During Monday's guilty pleas, one defendant pled guilty to four different cases involving sex offenses against a child and received community supervision, fines, jail time and community service in each case. According to 32nd Judicial District Attorney Ann Reed, several factors are taken into consideration in determining how to successfully prosecute sexually-based child abuse cases. Experience indicates that when a case of this nature is tried to a jury without the benefit of some evidence other than the victim's testimony, it is very difficult to win a guilty verdict.

Fire north of Jack Lambert Apartments

The Sweetwater Fire Department, Sweetwater Police Department and Nolan County Sheriff’s Office all responded to a grass fire that started just before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15.
The fire was directly north of the Jack Lambert Apartments, burning between Neff St. and Newman St.
According to Fire Chief Grant Madden, the cause of the fire is still unknown. The Fire Department will continue its investigation.

SEED Meeting held this past Monday

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their regular meeting on Monday morning, August 13, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce building, where discussion took place on a possible incentive proposal for a local company.
Benny Cornett with Cornett Computer Repair and Sales spoke to the board about his desire to grow his local business. With a repair shop located in downtown Sweetwater, Cornett continues to gain large commercial clients around Sweetwater and throughout Nolan County, such as courthouses, lawyers and real estate agents.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Aug. 14, 2012.

The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1600 block of Sam Houston.
• Criminal mischief — 1700 block of Henderson.
• Theft — 900 block of Elm.

Arrested by SPD:
• Chrystal King, 27 — Theft.
• Gabriel Villa, 38 — Theft.
• Tabitha Decker, 20 — Warrant.
• Male juvenile, 14 — Order of apprehension.

Meet the Mustang Coaches to be held Thursday

Sweetwater High School football fans will get a unique opportunity to meet new head coach Shane Mobley and members of his staff Thursday while enjoying some food and fellowship.
The event is called "Meet the Mustang Coaches" and will be held from 6-8 p.m. at the local Dairy Queen on 1608 Lamar.
According to store owner Jerry Hulcy, a number of other local celebrities will be on hand to serve up ice cream cones to the public for $1 each, and other food items will be available as well. Also, an autographed football jersey will be given away at the end of the event.

Tax-Free Weekend is this weekend

Tax-free weekend is just around the corner and will kick off this Friday, August 17, 2012--the one weekend event that's a reminder to parents, students and teachers that the school year is on the horizon.
For 14 years, Texas has participated in the Tax Free Weekend, allowing families to save money in their back-to-school pursuit. The weekend continues through Sunday, August 19--a week before the school year begins for the majority of public schools in the Lone Star State.
