Dudensing retires after 39 years

Many area residents showed their appreciation and support on Sunday, June 3, 2012, for Kenneth Dudensing, longtime Sweetwater FFA Agriculture Science teacher.
After almost four decades with Sweetwater Independent School District — 39 years — Dudensing is retiring. He has taught everything from welding in shop class, to hunter safety in wildlife management class, to animal protein requirements in advanced animal science class. He has even been a math tutor for students that have struggled with their math TAKS tests.

Three enter pleas, two jailed

Three people entered pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, June 4, 2012, with District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuting the cases.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 157 calls for service, issued four citations and made nine arrests from June 1-3, 2012.

The SPD received 75, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Missing person — Sweetwater area.
• Fraud — 1200 block of Lou.
• Unattended death — 500 block of Elm.
• Theft — 200 block of E. Fourth.
• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of Mustang.
• Runaway — 1200 block of Towncreek.
• Burglary of a habitation — 800 block of Roscoe.
• Theft — 700 block of NE Georgia.

Veterans Retraining Assistance Program being offered

Congress passed, and the President has signed into law, the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011. Included in this new law is the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). VRAP offers up to 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans. The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and the Department of Labor (DOL) are working together to roll out this new program on July 1, 2012.
The VRAP offers 12 months of training assistance to Veterans who:
• Are at least 35 but no more than 60 years old;
• Are unemployed;
• Received an other than dishonorable discharge;

FBC Vacation Bible School begins tonight

June 4, 2012

First Baptist Church saddles up for Vacation Bible School, June 4 through the 7, from 6-8 p.m. The first three nights will be held at First Baptist Church, (213 E. 3rd) beginning each evening in the church sanctuary for a round-up. Then they will travel along the Tejas Trail to snacks, recreation, crafts and Bible stories.

Melendez named SHS Teacher of the Year

Tina Melendez was given the honor of being named the 2011-12 SHS (Sweetwater High School) Teacher of the Year within the Sweetwater Independent School District.
Melendez is a 9th-12th grade Spanish II teacher at SHS. Out of her eight total years of teaching, six of those have been with Sweetwater ISD. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from McMurry University.

FFA teams recognized

The Sweetwater High School FFA Career Development teams were honored with a resolution during the May meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees. The teams qualified for state in Cotton Judging, Homesite Evaluation, Meats Judging, Milk Quality and Products Judging, Poultry Judging and Wool Judging.

Pennie Montgomery to speak at Aglow

Aglow International Sweetwater Community Lighthouse invites you to attend our meeting on Tuesday, June 5, at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 300 SE Georgia Avenue.
Guest speaker will be Pennie Montgomery from Spring, TX.
Pennie has been a Bible study teacher and prayer group leader for many years. In 1990, she became the Texas State Prayer Coordinator for Aglow International. Since that time she has traveled over the state teaching and ministering to the women of Aglow. Pennie also serves on the Aglow Global Prayer Council.

Mustang Band wins medals at State

While most of Texas was grilling barbecue and splashing in the pool on Memorial Day, seven outstanding student musicians from the Sweetwater High School Band were participating in the UIL State Solo Contest. The competitors, along with accompanist Bonnie Walters, chaperones Riley and Judith Kitchens, and director Ross Grant, traveled to Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, where the top musicians from across Texas performed for judges.

Hamilton returns to Sweetwater

Shaun Hamilton--one of the original jump rope boys from Philip Nolan and former SHS athlete--returned to Sweetwater with his wife Felicia on Monday, May 21 for two events held for students within the Sweetwater school district.
The Hamiltons first took part as keynote speakers in the "Female Force" student workshop for all 8th through 12th girls on Monday morning at the Center in the local TSTC West Texas Campus.
