Kamer named J.P. Cowen Teacher of the Year

Susie Kamer was recently announced as the 2011-2012 SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Teacher of the Year for J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center.
Kamer earned a Bachelor of Music degree at Abilene Christian University. She has spent her entire teaching career with the district as a Headstart teacher for the past six years.
She has been a member of the NHSA (National Head Start Association) and the TCTA (Texas Classroom Teachers Association). Within the community, she is an active member at Lighthouse Assembly of God as the worship leader and children's church leader.

Owl fledgling rescued

An owl fledgling was rescued on Wednesday morning after Danielle Sargeant — an employee of the Hall Law Firm in Downtown Sweetwater — found the owl near the Hall Law Firm in front of a glass door. Another employee called the Sweetwater Animal Hospital.
Veterinary Technician Brenda Stevens with Sweetwater Veterinary Hospital came to the rescue along with Animal Control Officer Donald Kite to take the fledgling back to the animal hospital.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 57 calls for service, issued 27 citations and made five arrests on April 24, 2012.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1200 block of Stanley.

Arrested by SPD:
• Angel Aguilar, 18 — Warrant.
• Timothy McGinnis, 51 — Public intoxication.
• Adam Muñoz, 25 — Warrant/possession of marijuana.
• Tyler Polk, 22 — Warrant.
• Ricky Rivera, 21 — Criminal mischief.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served two civil papers and made three arrests on April 24, 2012.

SPPA hosts reception for retiring Chief Kelley

Shown is retiring Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley with his wife, Scharles Kelley, accepting plaques at a retirement party hosted by the Sweetwater Police Patrol Association. Plaques were also made for the couple’s two sons, Paxton and Tanner.
Many members of the community and many agencies who work closely with the Sweetwater Police Department were in attendance at the reception held at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ.

Sheriff gives input on jail project

The Nolan County Commissioner’s Court met on Monday morning, April 23, and Item #5 on their agenda was to consider approval of the architects’ plans for the new Sheriff’s Offices and Jail.

Scholarship deadline approaches

The Nolan County Board of Realtors is offering to all interested Nolan County graduating seniors, of the Class of 2012, an opportunity to apply for the NCBR annual scholarship. If you are planning to continue your educational experience beyond high school, the NCBR is offering four $500 college scholarships to help you with your expenses.

Street dance in Roscoe

Many enjoyed the street dance in Roscoe "on the bricks" this past Saturday, April 21, 2012, with Eleven Hundred Springs (shown) providing the entertainment. The 1st Annual Screw Terlinquin Chili Cook-off took place earlier that day at The Lumberyard. All proceeds went toward the Open Door Child Development at the First United Methodist Church in Roscoe, a non-profit organization. A fireworks show was also displayed at the event.

Relay For Life to host new event, Idol

April 24, 2012

Come show off your singing ability at this year's Relay For Life event, planned for Friday, May 18, 2012, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Sweetwater High School track.
Relay Idol will be held the night of the event (be prepared to stay all night) and will consist of three judges and three heats. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. The event must have a minimum of 10 sign up to take place. All ages are welcome to enter the event.
Registration will be $10 and all proceeds will be given to the American Cancer Society.
