Sweetwater High School students were given the opportunity on Monday morning, January 7 to learn about the importance of higher education and more about Texas Tech University during an assembly featuring the interim president of the campus, Dr. Lawrence Schovanec.
Dr. Schovanec highlighted two points in his speech: for students to consider the advantages of a college education as well as the possibility of attending the Lubbock school.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 121 calls for service, issued 15 citations and made five arrests from Jan. 4-6, 2013.
The SPD received 24, 911 calls.

Expect a 50% chance of showers today with cloudy skies and a high near 47. Winds will be from the east at 5 to 10 mph, shifting to the north-northeast in the afternoon.
Tonight, we're looking at a 90% chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, some of which could produce heavy rainfall. The low will be around 41 with north winds at 10 to 15 mph. Gusts could be as high as 20 mph.

Jeff Watts, a paramedic at the Sweetwater Fire Department, recently graduated from Trainingdivision.com in Crowley, TX. Watts comes from a long line of firefighters. His grandfather, Sidney Watts, was the founder of the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department in Medina, NY. His father, Gary Watts, is still a part of that volunteer fire department, along with some uncles and cousins.
The deadline for jobless Texans to qualify for emergency unemployment insurance benefits has been extended to Jan. 1, 2014. Federal legislation signed by President Barack Obama on Jan. 2, 2013 will extend benefits to approximately 120,000 Texans who would have otherwise exhausted their unemployment benefits on Dec. 31, 2012. Claimants should continue to request unemployment benefit payments on their scheduled day.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called to the scene of a fatal crash in Jones County on U.S. Highway 180, one mile west of the intersection with Farm Road 600 at 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
Expect mostly sunny skies and a high near 54 today, with south-southeast winds at 10 to 15 mph.

People in Sweetwater have heard the rumors, but now it's a reality that could bring in hundreds of jobs.Â
It's being referred to as the Cline Shale and much similar to whatâ€™s been happening in the oil industry in areas like Midland-Odessa is beginning to happen right here in the Big Country.
Sweetwater has long been known for its wind turbines, but lately there has been talk of another type of machinery headed that way.
"There's been a lot of talk about oil companies coming in," said one Sweetwater resident.
They're calling it the next oil boom.

As a member of The Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT), Texas National Bank was presented with the opportunity to nominate a teacher in the community who is currently promoting financial literacy.
