Porter retires after 35 years of service to SFD

For Jim Porter, the retiring Assistant Fire Chief from the Sweetwater Fire Department (SFD), it seems as if family has always been connected to his role--before, during and after his service.
For the past 35 years, Porter has served the community as a fireman; since 1986, he has been in the role of Assistant Fire Chief. However, during his stint, he was able to work alongside his father Ronald at the fire station.

• Keenan Rook, 27 — Evading, theft, possession of controlled substance, failure to identify.

• Kari Southern, 34 — Theft, public intoxication.

Deadline to apply for RSLSP extended

The deadline for eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay (RSLSP) has been extended to Oct. 21, 2012, providing those eligible more time to apply for the pay under the program guidelines.

Hospital track closed for new construction

June 19, 2012

Due to the construction of a new medical office building at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, the walking track and related areas will be closed beginning June 18, 2012. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital apologizes for any inconvenience and looks forward to the reopening of this area to the public at the completion of construction.

SEED board discusses preliminary budget

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday morning, June 18, 2012 at the Chamber of Commerce.
Kirstin Smith, the Asst. Marketing/Admin. Director, gave an update, recapping SEED's recent trip to the 2012 Windpower Conference that was held in Atlanta, Georgia. The show went well, with around 12,000 in attendance. While attendance was cited as lower than usual, the quality of the show was one of the best in recent years.

FSA County Committee nominations begin

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that county committee election nominations began June 15, 2012. Farmers, ranchers and landowners are encouraged to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the August 1, 2012 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 149 calls for service, issued eight citations and made nine arrests from June 15-17, 2012.

The SPD received 62, 911 calls.

• Possession of drug paraphernalia — 900 block of W. Arizona.
• Burglary of a habitation — 800 block of E. 14th.

• Burglary of a habitation — 800 block of E. 16th.
• Unattended death — 1500 block of Runnels.

Many enter Lake Sweetwater kids fishing tournament

A total of 45 kids signed up for the kids fishing tournament on Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Lake Sweetwater, sponsored by Pappy's Bait and Grill Shop and the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club. The event was held at the Lake Sweetwater public boat ramp, with the competition running from 8-10:30 a.m. Prizes were awarded for the Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish and Outstanding Angler to the following age groups: 3-5 year olds, 6-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds and 13-16 year olds. Judges for the competition were Mark Morgan and Jason Bond.

TSTC to lead in community projects

This year, as part of the TSTC (Texas State Technical College) Women's Leadership Institute's (WLI) mission to support the TSTC Values, each TSTC location — Waco, Harlingen, Marshall and West Texas (Abilene, Brownwood, Breckenridge, Sweetwater — will do a community project on Saturday, June 23, 2012.
The Sweetwater group spoke with Russell Jones, City of Sweetwater Director of Public Works, about painting the picnic tables at Newman Park and he was thrilled with the idea. He has also asked that the pillars of the pavilion be painted as well.

Two residents recognized for Relay efforts

The America Cancer Society would like to say a special thank you to all of those that braved the West Texas wind to come out and support the 10th annual Nolan and Scurry County Relay For Life. The event kicked off with almost 30 cancer survivors taking to the track for a victory lap. Their caregivers met them half-way and completed the lap hand-in-hand with their survivors. At dusk, the track was lined with hundreds of lit luminaria bags to honor those that have fought cancer and to remember those that lost their battles.
