Annual Jamaica held Sunday

The annual Jamaica (pronounced Hah-my-kah) festival at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Sweetwater raised funds for the parish on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012. The event featured an array of food, refreshments, games for all ages and music. Shown is Braelyn Gaytan fishing for a prize at one of the booths at the Jamaica. Running the booth were Carolyn Flores and Sierra Flores.

Mustangs celebrate Sammy Baugh Classic win

The Sweetwater Mustangs defeated the Eastland Mavericks 23-13 on Friday evening, Aug. 31, 2012, at the Sammy Baugh Classic at Mustang Bowl.

Nominations now being accepted for 2012 Outstanding Citizens, Business of the Year

August 31, 2012

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for those to be honored as Outstanding Young Citizen, Outstanding Female Citizen and Outstanding Male Citizen for 2012. Nominations are also being accepted for Sweetwater's Business of the Year award.
Deadline for submission of nominations is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. Honorees will be announced at the annual Chamber Banquet planned for Monday, Sept. 24.

Voting precincts being consolidated

Due to the recent redistricting process, Nolan County has once again been put into US District 19 instead of being split between Districts 19 and 11. The voter registrar's office is in the process of consolidating voting precincts 10 through 14 back into their original precincts before the 2009 redistricting.

SISD approves budget

The 2012-2013 budget for the Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) was approved during the SISD Board of Trustees' meeting, held at noon on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
The budget had already been presented at a recent workshop held on August 15, which was based on the passing of the Tax Ratification Election. While several changes were listed for the new budget, one of the significant differences was that there would be an increase for all pay scales.

TSTC introduces new simulators at open house

The local branch of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas held an Automotive Technology Open House on Thursday morning, August 30, 2012 to feature their new Alternative Fuel Simulators.
Starting with this fall semester, students in the Automotive Technology program will receive training in diagnostics, service and repair of light duty diesel, fuel /electric and compressed natural gas vehicles. Simulators include a Ford light diesel truck, GM light diesel truck, Toyota Prius Hybrid and a compressed natural gas engine.

Burgers Buy the Pool Labor Day event planned

A Labor Day event, “Burgers Buy the Pool,” will be held on Monday, Sept. 3. This event is being held as a fundraiser, hosted by JavaJax in Sweetwater, for the Nolan County Girl Scouts to help with their efforts in restoring the swimming pool at Camp Boothe Oaks. Improvements to the pool are necessary in order for the Girl Scouts to have an energy efficient, ADA compliant swimming pool that would draw full enrollment for a Summer Resident Girl Scout Camp to once again be held at the local camp facility.

USDA reminds producers of Sept. 4 sales closing date for noninsurable crops

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, reminds producers that they have until Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, to purchase coverage through the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP). The sales closing date is actually Sept. 1, 2012, but producers have until Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, to purchase coverage this year because Sept. 1 falls on a weekend and the following Monday is a holiday.
NAP provides financial assistance to producers of noninsurable crops when low yields, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to normal disasters.

Americans are a people of spectators. We sit and watch ball games, television programs and movies. This mind set has slipped into our churches where we hire pastors and staff and then show up on Sunday morning, sit with arms folded, and say, “Okay, show me what you got!” It’s like the family that visited the church and then at home the dad said, “The preacher was too boring.” The mom said, “The music was too loud.” The teenager said, “The youth were snobs,” but the little boy said, “I thought it was a pretty good show for a quarter.” 

Sammy Baugh Classic begins at Mustang Bowl

This year’s Sammy Baugh Classic began yesterday, Thursday, Aug. 30, as the Roscoe Plowboys challenged the DeLeon Bearcats. The Plowboys were defeated 38-6 at the game.
