Milk carrier wrecks on Highway 84

August 13, 2012

The Roscoe Fire Department responded to a commercial motor vehicle accident at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at the intersection of Highway 84 and CR 111.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to Rolling Plans Memorial Hospital by the Sweetwater Fire Department. The vehicle was transporting milk at the time of the accident.

Argument escalates to robbery

A local business was robbed on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, when a woman did not like the price of an item she planned to purchase.
According to Lt. Randy Hanes of the Sweetwater Police Department, a woman entered a business on the 1400 block of Hailey Street in Sweetwater and became upset when she learned the price of an item she had ordered. "There was a dispute over the payment of the property and an altercation ensued."

Changes in Sweetwater ISD lunch program

The start of the school year always brings about change, but one significant change this year will be evident in the cafeterias within Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District)--along with other school cafeterias throughout the entire country.
First Lady Michelle Obama has made waves during this presidential term through her "Let's Move" campaign--a program incepted to fight childhood obesity. With this movement, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 was incepted and signed. And starting this school year, school districts nationwide must meet the new standards of nutrition for meals.

Two jailed after pleas

Two people were jailed after entering pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012. District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuted the cases.
Brock Ethan Walker, along with his attorney, Kristen Postell, pled guilty to evading arrest with a vehicle, a third degree felony. For his plea, Walker received six years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will also have to pay a $3,000 fine, $309 in court costs and $500 in attorney's fees.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 39 calls for service, issued two citations and made one arrest on Aug. 9, 2012.

The SPD received 24, 911 calls.

RELIGION: Sweetwater Aglow to host Back To School Prayer Walk

SWEETWATER AGLOW
Aglow International Sweetwater Community Lighthouse will host the "Back to School Prayer Walk" on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, 412 Newman Street. We will gather at the church for a short Word and some praise and worship before we go out and cover our schools with prayer. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the fellowship hall.

King promoted to Assistant Fire Chief

The Sweetwater Fire Department has recently promoted one of its own to Assistant Fire Chief. Paul King is the newest supervisor of his shift after the retirement of Jim Porter after 35 years of service.
King is an Intermediate Emergency Medical Technician and a firefighter, who has been with the Sweetwater Fire Department for 11 years.

Three dogs currently available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male blue heeler puppy, a female terrier mix and a male terrier mix. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
