Cancer Fears the Walker was the motto for this year's Nolan and Scurry County Relay for Life. Shown are members of area communities in the first lap â€”Â the Survivor Lap â€”Â celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer.
Teams of Nolan and Scurry County residents gathered at the Sweetwater High Track on Friday, May 18, at 7 p.m. for an overnight relay against cancer. This yearâ€™s event marked the 10th anniversary of the Relay in Sweetwater.
Nominations for members to serve on the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are now being accepted through May 29. Nominations should be in writing and should include the name of the nominee, a brief justification of why the nominee should be approved and the name and contact information for the person submitting the nomination.
A worker with GE Wind Services was involved in an industrial accident on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Trent-Mesa Wind Farm, located east of Sweetwater and off of Adrian Road at County Road 131.
The incident took place as the employee was working on a transformer. An electrical discharge occurred, letting off a bright flash at the scene. The worker was wearing a protective suit at the time, and the machine was still in tact after the accident.
The Nolan County Cruisers hosted their second car show benefitting the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Nolan County Courthouse. A total of 48 vehicles were entered into the show, raising $1,000 for WTCAC. A check was presented to WTCAC on Thursday, May 17, 2012. The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued 22 citations and made one arrest on May 16, 2012.
The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on May 16, 2012.

Raspberry Cream Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

Yield: 24 cupcakes
Serving size: 1 cupcake with frosting
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup milk
3/4 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups raspberries, fresh or frozen
Cream Cheese Frosting
2 packages of cream cheese (8 ounces) at room temperature
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350Â°F. Line muffin tin with 24 cupcake liners.
Summer's on the horizon, and the City of Sweetwater will be opening the Municipal Pool for a preview before the swimsuit season begins.
From Saturday, May 26 to Monday, May 28, the pool will be open for Memorial Day weekend. Larry Hopple will return as the pool's manager this year.
The first official day of operation will be on Friday, June 1 and will have regular hours throughout the summer. The final business day for the city pool will be on Friday, August 24.
The Future Sweetwater class of 2012, consisting of 13 Sweetwater High School sophomores, graduated on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Texas State Technical College.
Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Jacque McCoy welcomed everyone to the event and Kirby Andrews led the invocation.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has several pets available for adoption.
Available for adoption are a pair of mixed breed puppies, one white and one brown, a female Calico and her kitten, a black and white male mixed breed puppy and a black and white female cat with her five kittens.
Sweetwaterâ€™s animal control officer, Don Kite would like to remind the public not to abandon animals at the shelter. The female cat with her five kittens were left at the door of the shelter in a cardboard box. If the mother had not been with the kittens, they would have been put down.
