Children raise money for food pantry

August 24, 2012

A group of cousins recently got together to raise money for a good cause. Two six-year-olds, Talan Yowell and Makenzie Ince, along with three-year-old Emma Ince, manned a lemonade stand on Morris Street in Sweetwater earlier this week. All of their proceeds went to Gaylord's Pantry, the food pantry at First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater.

Highland Heights donates school supplies

Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated 14 sets of school supplies for needy second and third graders at East Ridge Elementary. They were delivered to the campus the following Monday.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on Aug. 22, 2012.

The SPD received 47, 911 calls.

• Criminal mischief — 800 block of E. Arizona.
• Theft — 400 block of E. 14th.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served six civil papers and made no arrests on Aug. 22, 2012.

Sweetwater's weekend weather

Rain chances will be with us all weekend in Sweetwater, as today calls for a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. The high will be near 93 with partly sunny skies and winds from the south at 15 mph. Gusts will be as high as 25 mph.
Friday night, expect a 20% chance of precipitation with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 72. Winds will remain at the south around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
On Saturday, the 20% chance of rain and thunderstorms continue with a high near 94. We'll see partly sunny skies and south-southeast winds at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Six enter pleas in district court

Johnny Williams, with attorney, Britt Thurman, pled true to revoking his probation. He was originally put on probation on Oct. 19, 2009, for forgery, a state jail felony. For his plea, Williams received 24 months confinement in the State Jail Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will also have to pay a $1,500 fine, $305 in court costs and $1,000 in attorneys fees.

BCMRC to host free PFA training class

The Big Country Medical Reserve Corps is offering a Psychological First Aid (PFA) Training Class on Saturday, Aug. 25, beginning at 9 a.m. in the training room located by the Emergency Room entrance at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. The class will be free of charge to those that register and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served and lunch can be purchased from the hospital cafeteria.

Grand Jury indicts 12

A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted 12 people on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012. Eight of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Anthony Dylan Bentley was indicted on three counts including sexual assault, a second degree felony, indecency with a child by contact, a second degree felony and indecency with a child by exposure, a third degree felony. The victim was younger than 17 years old at the time of the crimes around Feb. 1, 2012. His bond was set at $25,000.

United Way luncheon honors contributors

The Nolan County United Way's Loyal Contributors Luncheon was held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) training classroom.
Following the convocation by Martin Baker, a welcome was given by Executive Director Wendy Smartt. Beverly Campbell then introduced the officers and members of the Board of Directors.
Kirby Andrews, one of the board members, collectively thanked the hospital's food staff, along with those in attendance representing the agencies and contributors for their work and support over the past year.
