TSTC to host college preview

The Sweetwater Campus of Texas State Technical College West Texas will host a College Preview and Open House on Saturday, April 14. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is open to the public. TSTC West Texas advisors will lead prospective students on a campus tour where they will meet the college's top-notch faculty and have the opportunity to check out first-hand the brand-new automotive alternative fuel trainers current students are using, as well as the wind turbine drive train the Wind Technology students train on.

SEED Presents at Regional Economic Development Meeting

The Texas Midwest Economic Development Alliance met in Anson on March 7, for their spring meeting. One of the purposes of the Alliance is to bring educational topics and information to Alliance members. Approximately 35 cities were in attendance.
A featured topic of the day was presented by Kirstin Smith and Ken Becker, with Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) who explained the Speakers Bureau and Senior Interview Day conducted in Nolan County to prepare the future workforce.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 130 calls for service, issued seven citations and made seven arrests from March 30 - April 1, 2012.

The SPD received 67, 911 calls.

• Burglary of a residence — 400 block of Canfil.

• Theft — 1100 block of E. Broadway.
• Theft — 1700 block of Hailey.
• Indecency with a child — Sweetwater.

Lower Rolling Plains Agricultural Conference set for April 4 in Snyder

SNYDER – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the annual multi-county “Lower Rolling Plains Agricultural Conference” from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, at the Scurry Coliseum, 900 E. Coliseum Drive in Snyder. 
“The conference will cover all the important topics facing our area’s agricultural producers in the season ahead,” said Zachary Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County. 
“The topics will range all the way from cotton economics to dealing with feral hogs and everything in between,” he said.

Girl Scouts contribute to the community

A group of local Girl Scouts recently helped to beautify their community by painting the First Financial Bank Research Center, as it will be called. The Center is located on the corner of Locust and East Third Streets in Downtown Sweetwater, on the First Financial Bank property. The Girl Scouts included girls from Troop 7051 Nikki Gutierrez and Victoria Gutierrez, from Troop 7050 Faith Boyd, from Troop 7051 Shania Boyd, Emma Foust, Gabriella Olguin and De Ann Frazier and from Troop 7000 Taylor Shamblin and Christa Arnold and Sweetwater's service unit manager Judy Leighow and Liz Sands.

Health Department celebrates NIIW

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities. This year’s NIIW is April 21-28. Infants are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases; that is why it is critical to protect them through immunizations. Each day, nearly 12,000 babies are born in the United States who will need to be immunized against 14-vaccine-preventable diseases before age two.

Texas FSA reminds producers of approaching deadline for CRP general sign-up

Farm Service Agency Texas Acting Executive Director James B. Douglass today reminded landowners, farmers and ranchers in Texas that the opportunity to enroll in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general sign-up 43 ends on Friday, April 6. Producers who want to offer eligible land for CRP's competitive general sign-up may enroll at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office where their farm records are maintained.

Paramedic Program first in area to earn national accreditation

The Texas State Technical College West Texas Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program is the first college in the area to earn national accreditation through The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Today the Sweetwater Police Patrol Association called on the Sweetwater City Council to take a stronger role in the search for a replacement of longtime Police Chief Jim Kelley.
“This city is about to choose the first new police chief in 28 years,” said Charley Wilkison, Director of Public Affairs at the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, or CLEAT. “It’s a big step and the local association has asked to be a part of the selection process but have been told ‘no’ by the City Manager.”
