The holiday season can be a difficult time for people with diabetes as many popular seasonal treats are rich in sugar and other ingredients harmful to diabetics. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) hopes to equip the community with the knowledge to make better food choices with a free Munch and Learn Seminar on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
All of Ms. Irene Armstrong's seventh grade Texas History class (112 students) made Veterans Day Posters to send to military heroes over the holidays.
Some examples are shown, with students Alondra Ruiz, Colt Bewley, Katy Nixon, Alicia Hernandez, Bella PeĂ±a, Esmeralda Mendez, Eva Ornelas, Bridgette Lanier and Jaelyn Page.
Also, 26 National Junior Honor Society members made holiday cards for military heroes.
National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that was established to highlight the importance of continuing influenza vaccination, as well as fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the holiday season into January and beyond. NIVW was the week of Dec. 2-8.
The health department wants to encourage residents to use preventive actions:
â€˘ Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
â€˘ Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Construction began on Monday, Sept. 10, for the new Love's Truck Stop in Sweetwater and has been continuing at a fast pace.
Expected completion is around the end of February 2013. The truck stop will also house an Arby's restaurant.
The land is 53.14 acres and is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Hopkins Road and Interstate 20.
It's going to be a cold one out there this Monday! The high will be near 43 with sunny skies, with northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph. They will become eastern winds in the afternoon.
Tonight, we'll see a hard freeze with a low around 25. Winds will be from the south-southeast at 5 to 10 mph.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued two citations and made no arrests on Dec. 6, 2012.
The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Dec. 6, 2012.

â€˘Â Juan Christian Gomez, 30, of El Paso â€”Â Warrant/surety withdrawal.
Calls for service:
Christmas is a special time and many people show their pride by lighting their yards and homes. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce wants to reward the best of the best.
The Chamber will be sponsoring the annual residential lighting contest for the Sweetwater and Roscoe communities. A group of judges will drive around town Dec. 17-19, to judge all homes entered in the contest with Christmas decorations and lights on display.
Every year, many groups, organizations, businesses and individuals devote many volunteer hours before, during and after distribution to the Sweetwater Goodfellows to make sure that families in need have a better Christmas. On Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5, Texas State Technical College of Sweetwater employees and Fitness Center members met to collect toys and food for the Sweetwater Goodfellows. TSTCâ€™s Staff Senate hosted the get together and served cookies and hot chocolate.
During the Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors' meeting on Monday night, November 26 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), discussion was held on how upcoming political issues--namely the Affordable Care Act (also called "Obamacare") and the looming fiscal cliff, would possibly impact the local hospital.
Hospital administrator Donna Boatright acknowledged that there are several unknowns in the next year for both of the issues at hand. But the most immediate issues relate to the fiscal cliff and its impending cuts.
