A memorial blood drive for Joe Rivas will take place on Thursday, Nov. 1. Meek Blood Center will have bloodmobiles at the Nolan County Courthouse and the Sweetwater Spine Clinic from noon until 6 p.m. The clinic is located at 1413 Hailey.
According to information provided by Joeâ€™s mother, Lee Cantu, Joe passed away on Nov. 26, 2007 after a 4 1/2 year battle with Ewingâ€™s sarcoma. Joe received many blood transfusions during his treatment, and was grateful for each pint of blood he received.
State Representative Susan L. King, who represents District 71, held a legislative forum on Thursday morning, October 25 on the second floor of the Hall Law Firm.
The gathering opened with a brief discussion on the upcoming 83rd Legislative Session, which will begin on January 8, 2013. While they meet for only 140 days on odd-numbered years, an additional session can be requested. With six lawsuits, King said, the extended session is highly likely.
Mark Garcia, Assistant Vice President of Loans at First Financial Bank in Sweetwater, visited with Sweetwater High School students in Nina Wilson's class.
Garcia spoke with students about the importance of being responsible with their credit. He explained what credit is, how to establish it and how to properly maintain it.
Garcia also explained to students what bad credit is and how it effects everything in their lives.
At the meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District's board of directors, approval was given to a generator rental agreement and repair estimate. The meeting was held on Monday night, October 22 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
As a result of a radiator leak, several companies have been examined to take on the task of removing the radiator and repairing it. The approved quote from Warren CAT stands at approximately $15,000, which will include a stand-in emergency generator.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 45 calls for service, issued three citations and made no arrests on Oct. 24, 2012.
The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had seven calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Oct. 24, 2012.

Texas State Technical College West Texasâ€™ vocational nursing students from Breckenridge and Sweetwater campuses administered approximately 600 flu vaccines to the Abilene State Supported Living Center's employees on Oct. 3 and 4.

During the Monday morning county commissioners' meeting, Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden shared that the Emergency Vehicle Driving Simulator from the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX)--part of the Texas A&M University System--would be at the fire station for the first part of the week.
From Monday through Wednesday, a morning and afternoon session was held, which offered training on defensive driving, followed by operation on the simulator. The simulator gives drivers various scenarios to be completed.
