Sweetwater to participate in National Day of Prayer

As American troops remain in harm’s way, the economy continues to waiver, and upcoming elections quickly approach, citizens of the United States are preparing to exercise their freedom to gather, worship, and pray. Millions will answer the call to prayer on Thursday, May 3, in observance of the 61st annual National Day of Prayer. Organized events will be held in thousands of public venues where intercession will be made for America and its leadership.

Rep. King hosts town hall meeting

State Representative Susan L. King held a Public Town Hall Meeting on Monday morning, April 30, 2012 at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
She represents Nolan and Taylor County residents in District 71 and is currently serving her third term in the Texas House of Representatives.
The meeting opened with a welcome from Rep. King on the past legislative session along with a forecast for the upcoming 83rd Legislative Session to begin on January 13.

Six dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has six dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a female mixed breed, two male mixed pitbulls, one female Labrador mix, one male Labrador mix and one female golden retriever. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.

Holland Hearing providing audiology services locally

Jay W. Holland and Sue Ann Holland, both Audiologists at Holland Hearing Center of Abilene, visited the Hoyt House on Tuesday, May 1.
Jay and Sue Ann will be traveling to Sweetwater on the first Tuesday of every month for maintenance on existing hearing aids as well as evaluations of new patients, with fittings being done on-site. They will also be available to answer general questions on hearing and amplification.
Jay and Sue Ann decided to make the trip to Sweetwater once a month for those patients that have trouble getting to the Holland Hearing Center in Abilene.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued 14 citations and made one arrest on April 30, 2012.

The SPD received 25, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 200 block of SE Georgia.
• Theft — 900 block of W. Arizona.

Arrested by SPD:
• Mark Bolton, 53 — Driving while intoxicated.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served no civil papers and made no arrests on April 30, 2012.
Calls for service:
• Suspicious vehicle — CR 227.
• Harassment — Oak.
• Information only — CR 143.

Kelley's final curtain call

Outgoing Sweetwater Police Chief Jim Kelley has taken a phrase from the popular TV police drama ADAM-12, "to protect and serve", and has embraced that mindset in his past 35 years of local law enforcement service.
"It fits for wearing the badge," he says.
But on May 1, 2012, he officially steps out of the police chief role toward a new journey — retirement.

Family RV to host Chamber Coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Family RV Center, located at 1410 NW Georgia or Interstate 20 exit 243.
The business is owned by Gil, Gabe and Grant Cherry. They offer sales and service on new and used recreational vehicles with Forest River, Sierra, Palomino, Puma, Sabre, Keystone Alpine, Cougar and Passport brands stocked.

Responsible land management and care of our soil makes it possible to feed a population that is increasing, while agricultural land is decreasing.

SNCHD celebrates NIIW

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is an annual observance to highlight the importance of protecting infants from vaccine-preventable diseases and celebrate the achievements of immunization programs in promoting healthy communities. This year’s NIIW was April 21-28. Infants are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases; that is why it is critical to protect them through immunizations. Each day, nearly 12,000 babies are born in the United States who will need to be immunized against 14-vaccine-preventable diseases before age two.
