The Farm Service Agency (FSA) is now accepting applications for Emergency Farm Loans resulting from damages and losses caused by drought occurring from January 1, 2012 and continuing.
These two 1962 graduates of Sweetwater (Newman) High School celebrated their 50th year reunion with old classmates this weekend. Pictured are Betty Jamison Swann, the 1962 homecoming queen, and Dr. Bud Alldredge, who was chosen Mr. Mustang that year. They helped crown Courtnie Thompson, who was chosen Friday as the 2012 homecoming queen at halftime of the football game held at Mustang Bowl between Sweetwater and Andrews.
During the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees meeting held on Thursday, August 30, one of the items discussed was the campus and AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) ratings.
The state has recently raised the bar considerably in their specific standards. This past year, students--overall--were to meet the goal of an 87% passing rate or higher in Reading/English-Language Arts and an 83% passing rate or higher for Math in the new STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness).
During the Wednesday afternoon faculty meeting at Sweetwater Middle School, the teachers were given some great news that will once again make a huge impact at SMS.
The seventh graders are getting iPads.
Sweetwater High School Senior Courtnie Thompson was crowned the 2012 Homecoming Queen on Friday night, Sept. 7, 2012, during halftime of the homecoming football game. She is the daughter of Erica Hunt and Junior Hunt. She is shown with her escort, Romello Taylor. Thompson was crowned by the 1962 Homecoming Queen Betty Jamison Swann and the 1962 Mr. Mustang Buddy Alldredge.
Aglow International Sweetwater Community Lighthouse will host their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express, 300 SE Georgia Avenue.
On Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, many members of the 1962 class of Sweetwater High School will gather in Sweetwater to celebrate their 50th year reunion. This Homecoming will being at the Exes Tea and Pep Rally at Sweetwater High School for those classmates who have come in for Friday's activities.
The Dual Credit Program at Sweetwater High School has been around for many years. In fact, SHS was one of the very first high schools in West Texas to partner with a college. The original partnership was with Texas State Technical College right here in Sweetwater. Many students took advantage of this program for many years and continue to do so now with the partnership of Western Texas College. WTC accredits the academic core courses, while TSTC continues its support by sponsoring specialty technology courses.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Sept. 5, 2012.
The SPD received 34, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served one civil paper and made two arrests on Sept. 5, 2012.

The weekend weather will be cooling off considerably, but not before a hot Friday forecast. Today will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 103. Winds will be from the south at 15 to 20 mph, decreasing to 10 to 15 mph in the morning. Gusts could be as high as 25 mph.
Tonight, a 20% chance of precipitation comes in with along with a cold front. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a low around 62 and breezy. A north-northeast wind at 10 to 15 mph will increase to 20 to 25 mph in the evening, with gusts as high as 35 mph.
