Summer time means plenty of play time — so why not play with your food? Finding creative ways to enjoy healthy foods like watermelon is a great way to encourage the whole family to eat well — and have fun while doing it.

Skeet’s Texas Grill nominated for Freedom Award

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense agency, announced 225 Texas Guard and Reserve members nominated their employers for the 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The agency received 3,236 nominations nationwide. Receiving one of those nominations was Skeet's Texas Grill in Abilene. Skeet's is owned by Lindley "Skeet" Smith and family of Sweetwater. The Abilene Skeet's Texas Grill restaurant was nominated by Chase Wylie, a Texas Army National Guardsman.

TSTC to offer cooking classes to the public

Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater recently announced a series of culinary classes for the community.
The first class is a Demo class that will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28. The class is only $10 a student with a limit of 30 students. Knife Skills will be taught during this class. Enjoy gourmet coffee and cookies while learning how to properly use a knife. Proper knife skills allow cooks to work much more proficiently, safer and cleaner. "Come learn how this is done from a professional chef," said Coby Baumann, Culinary Instructor at TSTC Sweetwater.

Emmanuel Fellowship Church welcomes new team member

Emmanuel Fellowship Church announced the addition of a new team member to their staff. To help meet the needs of continued growth, Irene Escobar is filling the newly formed role of Associate Children’s Pastor for the church. "Irene has been an essential part of the Emmanuel Fellowship Children’s ministry for the past several years, serving as a classroom teacher and volunteer. Her faithful service has helped create the new ministry position she will now fill," said Pastor of Emmanuel Fellowship Church Eric vonAtzigen

TSTC Fitness Center to host Open House

Country Biggest Winner contest and to encourage those who are not entered in the contest, but want to get into shape, the Texas State Technical College Fitness Center will host an Open House from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2012. There will be a free workout for everyone. Also available will be a free Zumba session with Nick Alvarado at 5:30 p.m. There will be drawings every 30 minutes.

Sweetwater staying fit

As part of the Big Country Biggest Winner contest, local Zumba instructor Isabel Beltran will offer free classes this week for those signed up in the Big Country Biggest Winner contest. Her classes are held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays at Sweetwater Intermediate School. Classes also take place every other Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at SIS. Beltran is shown above leading a class in a Zumba workout routine during the Big Country Biggest Winner contest kick-off at the Sweetwater High School gym.

Gender of remains determined

The Big Spring Police Department has issued the following release regarding the gender of the remains found near the McMahon-Wrinkle Airport Tuesday afternoon:
The autopsy on the remains found in Big Spring, Texas began a short time ago in Tarrant County. Detective George Oliver of the Big Spring Police Dept. is in attendance. It has been determined that the remains are that of a male. As of this time nothing else has been determined and we will put out another release following completion of autopsy and a preliminary report from the medical examiner. No further details at this time.

MasterScapes opens Sweetwater office

MasterScapes, a landscape business that has been open since 1991 in Abilene, has recently opened an office in Sweetwater. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce honored the new office with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 22, 2012. The local office is located at 608 E. Avenue A. Ryan McCorkle is the local general manager. MasterScapes has been designing, constructing and maintaining the landscape of the Big Country for 20 years, including that of the Sweetwater Independent School District properties. Nolan County Courthouse repairs: progress made toward county projects

Rodney Harvey with Curtainwall Design Consulting led the powerpoint presentation and discussion regarding the state of the courthouse and the options available for repair during the special County Commissioners' meeting on Friday morning, March 16, 2012, in which several steps were taken toward the progress of the Nolan County Courthouse renovations as well as the construction of the new jail and sheriff's offices for the county.
