• Burglary of a building — 1000 block of W. 8th.
• Criminal mischief — 1000 block of W. 8th.
• Theft — 800 block of E. Avenue D.
• Disorderly conduct — 1200 block of Ragland.
• Sexual assault — 1600 block of Grand.
Arrested by SPD:
• Paul Anthony Gutierrez, 23 — Assault.
• Ramiee Brown, 19 — Theft.

Hamlin/Baker Win again at Sipapu Ski Resort’s 9th Annual Cardboard Derby

On Saturday, March 17, in Sipapu, New Mexico the Sipapu Ski Resort held its 9th Annual Cardboard Derby. The Cardboard Derby continues to grow in participants and spectators every year. This year’s event the “Team Division” was won again by “The West Texas Wind Runners” consisting of team members Chris Hamlin (duct tape specialist), James Hamlin (driver) and Dustin Baker (stability).

• Male juvenile, 14 — Criminal trespass.

• Chase Ramsey, 17 — Disorderly conduct.
• Frank Diaz, 30 — Family violence assault.
• Brittany Kincaid, 18 — Public intoxication.

7-11 hosting grand opening

After some necessary renovations, the 7-Eleven convenience store, located on Northeast Georgia in Sweetwater, is hosting a grand opening.
On August 25, 2011, the store was hit by a storm with high winds, resulting in the roof being torn off. For around four months, the store was closed to completely repair the building. During that time, owner Alon Brands Retail took advantage of an opportunity to make a number of changes to emphasize the company’s renewed commitment to cleanliness, varied products and full inventories of the items customers look for most.

Family Planning clinics offer broad range of services

The purpose of the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department Family Planning Program is to make available to citizens of the State who are of childbearing age comprehensive medical knowledge, assistance and services relating to the planning of families". The purpose of family planning is to provide women and men a means by which they decide for themselves the number, timing and spacing of their children.

Arrested by SPD:
• Pedro Monroy, 30 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on April 17, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Gabriela Rodriguez, 39, of El Paso — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.

It’s official —Brian Frieda appointed new police chief

The appointment of Brian Frieda as Sweetwater Police Chief was approved by the City Commission on Tuesday morning, April 17, 2012 at a special-called meeting at City Hall.
Prior to the vote, City Manager Eddie Brown recapped the hiring process and how the Texas Police Chief Association was utilized in the process. A regional committee of law enforcement leaders was formed for the local panel, which included Abilene Police Department chief Stan Standridge who was the chairman.

Local collegiate 4-H member serves as Ambassador at National 4-H Conference

Wade Howard, a Senior Agriculture Leadership major at Texas Tech University recently served as a Collegiate Ambassador for the National 4-H Conference in Washington, DC. Wade was one of 13 collegiate 4-H members selected nationwide to serve as an ambassador and the only ambassador chosen from Texas. The event was March 22-29, 2012.
