Mobley returns to SHS as head football coach

Although he's actually a Big Lake native, Shane Mobley said his hiring Monday as head football coach and athletic director at Sweetwater High School feels like coming home.
In a sense, he's right.
Mobley — unanimously hired by the Sweetwater ISD board at its regular monthly meeting to replace Craig Slaughter, who resigned last month— not only has deep roots in West Texas, but is returning to a place where he has coached previously and where his wife, Tecka, grew up.
"I'm very fired up for this," he said. "The fact is, I'm ready to come back to West Texas with my family."

Crime Stoppers announces Crime of the Month

The Nolan County Crime Stoppers have announced the Crime of the Month.
On Tuesday, April 10, 2012, it was reported to the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office that between Thursday, April 5, 2012 and Tuesday April 10, 2012 unknown person(s) entered an electric sub-station. Once inside the sub-station the person(s) took copper grounding strap off a piece of equipment. The copper grounding strap is described as being four (4) inches wide by three-eights (3/8) inches thick and comes in various lengths. The location of the electric sub-station is in south Nolan County.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 163 calls for service, issued 32 citations and made eight arrests from April 13-15, 2012.

The SPD received 67, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 800 block of E. 14th.
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.
• Criminal mischief — 800 block of Lubbock.
• Burglary of a building — 217 Loop 170.
• Theft — 400 block of W. New Mexico.
• Criminal trespass — 1400 block of Runnels.
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.

Sweetwater Animal Shelter closed

The Sweetwater Animal Shelter is currently closed and will remain closed for at least one week, until Monday, April 23, 2012, due to a recent outbreak of Parvo in the shelter.
"There have been a large number of Parvo cases in Nolan County recently both in my office, as well as at the East Ridge Veterinary Hospital," said Dr. Bud E. Alldredge, Veterinarian and owner of Sweetwater Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Alldredge is also the Nolan County Rabies Control Officer.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

• Disorderly conduct — 1200 block of Ragland.
• Unauthorized use of a vehicle — E. Ave A.
• Accident involving damage to vehicle — 1200 block of Towncreek.
• Theft — 1100 block of E. Broadway.
• Criminal mischief — 200 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Female juvenile, 14 — Assault.

Bow Hunters to host archery shoot

April 16, 2012

A 3D Archery Shoot, sponsored by the Sweetwater Bow Hunter's Association, will be held on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, 2012 on the north side of Lake Trammell.
Sign-in will take place on the back side of the dam under the cotton wood tree or at the picnic tables. The event has a $10 shooting fee which covers both days.
Free shooters include military and youth; youth under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Also, volunteers who help set up targets on Friday afternoon will get to shoot free.

FCCLA assists family displaced by fire

The Sweetwater High School FCCLA conducted a fundraiser to benefit the Regalado family who lost their house recently to a fire. The students made chocolate covered strawberries which were sold during the week of Feb. 14, raising $300. This was presented to Mrs. Regalado by Rachel Ratliff.

Local musician to join Grammy nominated group

A local musician is about to join forces with a nationally-recognized Tejano group.
Chapo Cerda of Sweetwater will make his debut with Grupo Vida, a three-time Grammy award nominee, on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Salsa Fest in Three Rivers, Texas.
Grupo Vida, also known as the Electric Cowboys, have toured with some well-known country acts like the Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson, and Jo Dee Messina and Kevin Fowler. On the Tejano circuit, they have shared the stage with Little Joe, Texas Latino, and Emilio and Raulito Navaira.

No Need for Need helps youth in Fisher County

ROBY, Texas – The percentage of poverty in the state of Texas is higher than the national average, according to the Basic Needs Coalition of Central Texas, with almost 16% of the population living below the poverty line. No Need for Need can bring comfort and support to those in the community who need food or warmth. Shelly Scherwitz, a farmer in Fisher County, recently received the opportunity to donate to the cause by designating $2,500 to No Need for Need through America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM.

Another phase of improvements planned for Municipal Auditorium
