Art show set for Nov. 19

The West Texas Art Guild is sponsoring its Third Annual Regional Art Show at the Civic Center in Colorado City on Saturday, Nov. 19. The show is unique in that it lasts only one day so that artists can enter their artwork that morning, have it judged and pick it up that afternoon. Prizes will be offered and there will be five categories: Watercolor, oils/acrylics, dry media, photography and 3-D.
Carolyn Walker will be giving a painting demonstration in acrylics and this is for any interested persons. The demonstration will take place in the Civic Center and will be starting at 10 a.m.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 55 calls for service, issued two citations and made one arrest on Nov. 2, 2011.

The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1700 block of Hailey.

Arrested by SPD:
• Terry Bradley, 38 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served 13 civil papers and made two arrests on Nov. 2, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• David Lee Shout, 20, of Sweetwater — Warrant/motion to revoke probation.
• Juan Martin Vina, 47, of Rotan — Warrant/parole violation.

WASP Museum hosts Chamber Coffee

The Texas Constitutional Amendment Election is approaching. There are several amendments scheduled for the Nov. 8 election seeking voter approval. Those amendments are:
• Proposition 1 “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran.”

RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program to offer free blood sugar checks

November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 8 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.

HOBY award winner announced

Shown are the winner of the HOBY award, Destiny Hopkins and runner up Teresa Perez. This award is a leadership award given each year to an outstanding sophomore who scores high in a written essay on leadership and who shows a positive attitude, leadership among his or her peers, is dependable, cooperates with others, has a high work ethic and has respect and courtesy for authority, classmates and themselves.

Round-Up for Rehab events raise over $33K

The West Texas Rehabilitation Center’s Round-Up for Rehab events in Sweetwater were again a big success. The Shrimp Peel/Auction and the sale at Sweetwater Cattle Auction this year raised over $33,000 according to Dan Huggins, Director of Donor Relations at the West Texas Rehab Center. Huggins said “We truly appreciate the support of the Sweetwater community. Once again, everyone, including many businesses and individuals, came through in a special way for our patients and our organization, we cannot do what we do without you.”

Conditions are expected mild and breezy this Wednesday morning ahead of a strong cold front which will move through during the early afternoon hours. Expect highs today in the lower 70s before the front works into the area shortly after noon.
Winds will shift from the south to the northwest at 20-30 miles per hour. A Wind Advisory is in effect for portions of the area from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. this evening.
Winds will subside a bit overnight, as high pressure builds into the area. Expect clear skies and lows in the low to mid 30s.

FSA offers assistance to producers affected by wildfires

The Nolan County Farm Service Agency (FSA) will have a sign-up for Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) that began on Oct. 17, 2011 and will continue through Nov. 16, 2011.
Producers that had fences damaged or destroyed due to wildfires may be eligible for cost-share assistance to rebuild or repair their fences. ECP payments are subject to FSA eligibility regulations and funding availability.
