$3 million in grants available from the Texas Veterans Commission

AUSTIN – The Texas Veterans Commission announces the availability of $3 million in grants to be awarded from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance.
Grant funds will be awarded to qualified charitable organizations, Veterans Service Organizations and local government agencies to address issues affecting Veterans and their families. Services funded to date include transportation to medical facilities, counseling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), housing assistance, short-term emergency financial needs, Veteran courts, legal assistance and career training.

EQIP ranking period ends soon

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) District Conservationist Mandi M. Ligon reminds agriculture producers that the ranking period cut-off date for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is Feb. 3, 2012. Producers interested in EQIP should submit applications to the Nolan County NRCS office by the deadline so their applications can be considered during the first ranking period of 2012.

SISD celebrates School Board Recognition Month

Texans benefit every day from the tireless work and countless hours dedicated by a group of more than 7,300 men and women in communities across the state. These public servants are elected to serve by local constituents and receive no compensation for their efforts. These men and women are the school board members of Texas. January is School Board Recognition Month and Sweetwater ISD will take this opportunity to thank these local leaders for devoting time to support public education and serve our local schools.

AVONDALE BAPTIST CHURCH
Greetings from the Avondale Baptist Church family! We would like to invite everyone to come and worship with us. We are located at 1405 Hoyt Street. Our regular Sunday schedule is: coffee fellowship at 9:20 a.m., Sunday school Bible study at 9:45 a.m., worship services at 10:50 a.m. and 6 p.m. and choir practice at 7 p.m. On Wednesday evening we have On-Mission groups for all ages at 7 p.m.

Castillo found not guilty

After around only an hour and a half of deliberations, a five-woman, seven-man jury found Julian Castillo not guilty of indecency with a child by contact on Thursday evening, Jan. 12, 2012.
A number of testimonies from the defense were heard on the second day of the trial — including the defendant himself, in the 32nd Judicial District Court in the Nolan County Courthouse.

Goodfellows announce donation from Tenaska

SWEETWATER, Texas – Sweetwater Goodfellows, the city’s annual holiday season fund drive for Nolan County residents in need, has received a $1,000 donation from Tenaska, Goodfellows President Billie Johnston has announced.
“On behalf of Sweetwater Goodfellows, I want to thank Tenaska for this generous contribution,” she said. “This donation will help provide a happier Christmas and holiday season for many of our neighbors in need this year.”

Clarinetist named to All-State Band

Last Saturday the top student musicians across Texas gathered to participate in the final round of competition for the Texas All-State Band. In Lubbock, over 250 students were invited, representing over 100 competing schools, from Abilene to Amarillo to El Paso. Three students from Sweetwater High School competed. Sophomore French hornist Stephen Le finished in seventh place out of 20 auditioning, just missing all-state by three chairs. Sophomore alto saxophonists Chase Scott placed third out of 15, just missing all-state by one spot.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on Jan. 11, 2012.

The SPD received 12, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Fraud — 1300 block of Lamar.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1200 block of Bristol.
Arrested by SPD:
• Christopher Reed, 35 — Theft.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had two calls for service, served three civil papers and made two arrests on Jan. 11, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Jesse James Gamez, 24, of Sweetwater — Warrants/public intoxication and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
